Background of the Case

In June 1981, the tragic deaths of two young women, Lisa Schwartzkopf and Cheryl Kemp, have haunted the Warren, Michigan community. Found in a home where they were house-sitting, Lisa, aged 20, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, while Cheryl, aged 22, was strangled and stabbed with scissors.

Key Developments Over the Years

Despite the investigation into their murders, significant evidence was destroyed in 1988 due to a misunderstanding that the case may have been a suicide. This misstep led to crucial physical evidence being lost, including bullets, shell casings, and other items collected during the initial investigation. According to a report by the Warren Police, this evidence was mistakenly concluded to be irrelevant at the time.

The Investigation Resumes

In recent months, Warren police, in collaboration with the Michigan State Police, have reopened the investigation into the case. Nearly 200 pages of police records are currently under review, with hopes that advances in forensic technology might provide new leads. According to the authorities, a fresh perspective and new DNA techniques will be used to reassess the existing evidence.

Circumstances of the Deaths

The evening before the gruesome discovery, Cheryl had spent time at the Main Act bar in Roseville while Lisa stayed at home feeling unwell. Witnesses reported seeing Cheryl returning toward their home late that night, shortly before a neighbor heard what sounded like gunshots around 2 a.m. The women were not found until the afternoon of June 12, triggering a homicide investigation that has endured for decades.

Witness Accounts and Investigation Challenges

Early investigations provided several plausible leads, including a potential male companion seen with Cheryl prior to returning home. A neighbor’s reports from that night referenced a vehicle seen leaving the area around the time of the suspected gunshots. Despite these observations, the passage of time and the destruction of physical evidence hindered progress in identifying a suspect.

Family’s Desires for Closure

The families of both women have long sought closure, expressing deep frustration at the lack of justice for their loved ones. “We would like to get some closure. It’s been far too long,” stated Laura Welsh, the fiancée of Lisa’s nephew. As authorities investigate anew, the hope is that modern technology will finally provide answers. “It’s painful to think someone out there is living freely,” Welsh commented.

Appeal for Information

Anyone with information related to the murders of Lisa Schwartzkopf and Cheryl Kemp is encouraged to reach out to the Warren Police Department at 586-574-4810. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. The investigation remains open as officials continue their quest for justice in this unresolved case.
