ICE Agent Hospitalized Following Assault Incident in Fresno
Fresno, Calif. (KFSN) – A federal agent from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is in serious condition at a local hospital after an altercation that left an elderly man and his daughter seeking help early Friday morning.
Incident Overview
The event unfolded around 3:30 AM at a residence located at the intersection of Dudley and Broadway in central Fresno. According to the Fresno Police Department, the incident began when a woman discovered 32-year-old David Gonzalez sleeping on her lawn.
After notifying her 72-year-old father, the elderly man confronted Gonzalez and requested that he leave the property.
Escalation of Violence
Upon awakening, Gonzalez allegedly exhibited signs of intoxication and launched an assault on the elderly man. When his daughter attempted to intervene, Gonzalez reportedly physically attacked her as well.
Fearing for their safety, the elderly man retrieved a firearm and shot Gonzalez during the confrontation.
Following Response
Gonzalez was subsequently handcuffed by the woman’s boyfriend, who is an off-duty police officer. He was then transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and is currently in serious condition.
The elderly shooter will not face charges, while Gonzales has been taken into custody on felony assault charges.
Context and Impact
Authorities have identified Gonzalez as an ICE agent stationed in Texas. Investigators are determining the circumstances surrounding his presence in the neighborhood prior to the incident. A handgun was recovered from the porch where Gonzalez was shot.
Fresno City Councilmember Miguel Arias noted that many ICE agents work remotely and often operate during the early hours, leading to concerns about potential activities in local nightlife areas. Arias mentioned, “An ICE agent that was off duty was out partying in Tower, clearly consumed too much, ended up in somebody’s front lawn that resulted in an incident.”
Reactions and Statements
Councilmember Mike Karbassi expressed his concerns over the increasing violence relating to law enforcement actions, emphasizing the need for a reevaluation of ICE operations in the area: “Enough is enough. We’ve endured days of fear-stricken enforcement that has now tilted into full-bore violence. I am calling on ICE to suspend its ongoing operations in the Central Valley.”
