Alabama AG Advocates for Women’s Sports Protections in Congress

Montgomery, AL – In a significant move, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has joined forces with a coalition of over 12 state attorneys general urging Congress to include protections for women’s collegiate athletics in the proposed Protect College Sports Act of 2026. This initiative seeks to ensure the integrity of women’s sports by addressing concerns around participation linked to biological sex.

Collaboration Among States

Marshall, alongside Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch and Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, co-led this initiative. They submitted a letter to key congressional leaders advocating for language that would secure the rights of states to enforce laws that limit participation in women’s teams based on biological sex.

Marshall stated, “In Alabama, we will not apologize for protecting opportunities that our female athletes have earned.” He emphasized the necessity of such language to maintain the competitive landscape of women’s collegiate sports.

States Rallying for Change

Currently, 27 states have enacted legislation restricting male participation in women’s sports, asserting that any federal college sports framework should respect these state laws. The attorneys general underscored their position by stating, “To protect college sports, you have to protect women’s sports,” framing their argument around the themes of opportunity, privacy, and safety for female athletes.

Ongoing National Debate

The conversation surrounding transgender participation in athletic events has created a complex legal and policy environment across the nation. Proponents of sex-based participation restrictions argue that these measures are essential for maintaining fair competition and safeguarding the privacy of female athletes. Conversely, opponents contend that such restrictions may discriminate against transgender athletes and could conflict with broader gender identity protections.

Details on the Protect College Sports Act

The Protect College Sports Act of 2026, identified as S. 4668, encompasses a wide array of issues affecting college athletics, including athlete rights concerning their name, image, and likeness, as well as academic and medical protections. This legislation was successfully passed in the Senate with a vote of 77-22 on September 28 and is now under consideration by the House of Representatives.

Widespread Support from State Officials

Joining Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana in this effort are attorneys general from Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Utah. Collectively, these officials are advocating for measures that they believe are critical for the protection of women’s collegiate sports.
