Allison Fisher Retires from Professional Competition Amid Parkinson’s Diagnosis

Allison Fisher, an iconic player in the world of cue sports, has announced her retirement from professional competition following a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Fisher, often honored as one of the greatest female pool and snooker players in history, shared her personal journey and decision through social media.

Career Overview

Regarded as “The Duchess of Doom,” Fisher solidified her legacy in women’s snooker by winning an impressive seven Women’s World Snooker Championship titles throughout her career. She gained prominence in the sport in the 1980s, particularly noted for her victories over Stacey Hillyard in multiple World Championship finals, including those held in 1985, 1993, and 1994.

In 1995, Fisher transitioned from snooker to American 9-ball pool, where she continued to excel, showcasing her formidable skills on the pool circuit.

Retirement Announcement

In her heartfelt announcement, Fisher revealed, “Last year, I was diagnosed with the early stages of Parkinson’s disease.” She elaborated on her decision to keep her diagnosis private initially, stating, “I needed time to process what it meant for me, my life and, of course, my career.”

As the effects of Parkinson’s have begun to challenge her capacity to compete at an elite level, Fisher made the difficult choice to retire. She expressed gratitude for her journey in cue sports, saying, “Cue sports have been such an enormous part of my life.”

Future Plans and Legacy

While the competitive chapter of her career has concluded, Fisher emphasized her enduring love for the game and her commitment to staying involved in cue sports. She mentioned plans to engage in teaching and commentary, alongside participating in projects like Legends of the Cue.

Reflecting on her career, she concluded, “This may be the end of one chapter, but it is certainly not the end of my journey in cue sports.” Fisher has also expressed her heartfelt thanks to fans and supporters who have stood by her throughout her illustrious career.

Allison Fisher: Career Highlights

  • Seven-time Women’s World Snooker Champion
  • Multiple victories over Stacey Hillyard in World Championship finals: 1985, 1993, 1994

  • Transitioned to American 9-ball pool in 1995 with great success
