On Wednesday, several remarkable individuals were honored with the prestigious Right Livelihood Award, a recognition aimed at celebrating those making a significant impact towards a more equitable and harmonious global society. This year’s recipients included an AI researcher from the United States, a Pakistani lawyer, and two organizations dedicated to defending human rights and community interests. The award, established by philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull in 1980, is often referred to as the “alternative Nobel Prize” and is awarded annually in recognition of efforts in environmental and international development work.

Among the recipients is Timnit Gebru, a pioneering AI researcher and founder of the Distributed AI Research Institute. She was awarded for her critical investigations into bias in artificial intelligence systems. The Right Livelihood jury recognized her efforts in “challenging concentrated power in artificial intelligence” and promoting technology that is equitable and respects human rights. Gebru, who gained significant attention due to her dismissal from Google in 2020 after resisting pressure to retract a paper on bias in AI models, has become a pivotal voice advocating for justice in the tech industry.

Jalila Haider, a lawyer from Pakistan, was also awarded for her groundbreaking work as the first female attorney from her Hazara community. The jury acknowledged her dedication to combating ethnic, gender, and state violence, emphasizing her mission that “no human being is illegal.” Haider has played an integral role in defending marginalized communities and has helped secure justice for those overlooked by authorities, particularly targeting ethnic, gender, and religious minorities as well as refugees.

The Rural Women’s Assembly, representing over 178,000 small-scale farmers across eleven Southern African nations, received the award for their comprehensive approach to defending land rights and women’s autonomy against both corporate and patriarchal exploitation. The jury emphasized the group’s notable efforts in preserving local seed varieties and advocating for sustainable agricultural practices, which are crucial for protecting cultural heritage in farming.

Lastly, the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA) was honored as a pillar of moral integrity within the country. The association, founded in 1994, has been instrumental in promoting and protecting democratic values while resisting government repression. The organization has been widely recognized for its role in nurturing civic engagement and providing legal support during periods of political unrest, ensuring that democratic principles are upheld.

The Right Livelihood Awards not only highlight individual and organizational achievements but also reflect a broader commitment to social justice and human rights across various sectors globally. Each of this year’s winners exemplifies the resilience and dedication required to challenge injustices and empower communities.
