TULSA, Okla. — The Go Red for Women luncheon, organized by the American Heart Association, serves as a pivotal event aimed at raising awareness about women’s cardiovascular health. Executives and attendees gathered to emphasize the urgent need for education and awareness surrounding this critical health issue.

Highlighting the Severity of Cardiovascular Disease in Women

Megan Korn, Executive Director of the Tulsa chapter of the American Heart Association, opened the event by underscoring the stark reality that cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death among women. “Really, today is about the Go Red for Women movement,” she stated, drawing attention to the need for ongoing education and awareness.

Preventable Factors in Cardiovascular Health

Korn highlighted that approximately 70% of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease are preventable, emphasizing the significance of lifestyle choices. These include:

  • Maintaining a healthy diet
  • Regular physical activity
  • Ensuring adequate sleep
  • Being aware of personal health metrics
  • Understanding genetic predispositions and family medical history

She pointed out that nearly 45% of women aged 20 and older are living with some form of cardiovascular disease, noting that women are frequently under-researched, under-diagnosed, and under-treated. The event aims to bridge this gap by informing both men and women about the importance of women’s heart health.

Real Stories, Real Impact

A key feature of the luncheon is sharing the personal experiences of survivors, which adds a deeply human element to the event. This year, two remarkable survivors, Amanda and Abby Winston, shared their journeys. Both faced serious consequences due to their family histories—one suffered a stroke and the other a heart attack, occurring within years of each other. Their stories serve to educate attendees about recognizing risks associated with cardiovascular disease and ways to advocate for better health practices.

Empowering Women Through Education

The luncheon also stressed the importance of preventative measures and recognizing symptoms of cardiac events. Korn explained, “It comes down to the choices we make every day and how we live.” Key educational points included:

  • Understanding symptoms of cardiac arrest and stroke
  • Learning basic CPR techniques, which can be mastered in just 90 seconds
  • Encouraging proactive health management among the public

Through these discussions and workshops, the event aims to empower women with the knowledge necessary to make informed health choices and respond effectively in emergencies.

Supporting a Healthier Future

The overarching goal of the Go Red for Women luncheon is to support the mission of the American Heart Association in Tulsa, which focuses on fostering longer, healthier lives. The involvement of community figures, such as FOX23 evening anchor Shae Rozzi, who emceed the event, further amplifies the message of cardiovascular health awareness.
