In a recent announcement on the WebKit blog regarding the latest enhancements in Safari version 27.1, Apple’s Jen Simmons outlined ongoing efforts to optimize web browsing on the iPhone Duo’s outer display.
Identifying Current Challenges with Safari on the iPhone Duo
Reviews of the iPhone Duo have frequently highlighted a significant limitation of Safari—its interface constrains the outer display, leaving limited space for website content. Critics, including notable tech reviewers, have pointed out that the right-aligned control elements take up a considerable portion of the available screen area.
“The awkwardness of the iPhone’s 5.4-inch outer display shows up in Safari. The web simply isn’t optimized for this form factor…the right-aligned controls on iPhone Duo eat into the usable screen real estate in Safari especially.”
This observation resonates with many new users who find the experience on the outer display less than favorable, especially when navigating web content.
Apple’s Commitment to Improvement
In response to user feedback, Jen Simmons announced that Apple is actively exploring methods to enhance the usability of the outer display for web browsing. She noted in her update that currently, websites cannot utilize the area behind Safari’s controls on the iPhone Duo’s outer display, a limitation that Apple aims to address.
“We would like to give web designers and developers the ability to design and use that space in more creative ways…It might seem like there’s just one obvious way to make this possible, but really there are many possibilities.”
Simmons elaborated that the traditional method of extending web layouts using the HTML viewport meta tag could lead to complications, as many websites are not designed to accommodate areas obscured by screen controls. Instead, she encouraged developers to collaborate with Apple as they seek a more effective solution.
“We are investigating if there’s a better way to accomplish the same result — something more foolproof and perhaps easier for you to use. If you have ideas, we’d love to hear them.”
