Apple Strengthens App Store Guidelines Against Nonconsensual Image Generation
In a recent announcement, Apple has updated its App Store policies to more clearly prohibit applications that utilize AI tools to create intimate images of individuals without their consent, commonly referred to as “nudify” apps. This significant move reflects the company’s commitment to enhancing user safety and privacy.
New Content Moderation Requirements
Apple emphasized that developers must take proactive measures to detect and eliminate any instances of nonconsensual sexual imagery within their apps. According to the updated guidelines:
- Developers are required to implement effective safeguards to prevent such violations.
- Should developers ignore warnings regarding breaches or fail to take corrective actions, their apps may face removal from the App Store.
Clarification on “Bait-and-Switch” Apps
Furthermore, Apple has elaborated on its stance against “bait-and-switch” applications, which are those that modify their features, including nudification capabilities, after receiving initial approval. This clarification is intended to prevent misleading practices that could harm users.
Commitment to Safety and Child Protection
Beyond addressing nonconsensual image creation, the updated guidelines specify that any app identified as facilitating human trafficking or the exploitation of children will face removal from the App Store. Such apps will also be blocked from any alternative distribution channels.
