Binance Faces $4.6 Billion Withdrawal After Major Security Breach
In the wake of what security experts describe as the largest theft in cryptocurrency history, Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has reported substantial user withdrawals. Customers withdrew over $4.6 billion following a major security incident that has been linked to cybercriminals associated with North Korea.
Transaction Resumption and Withdrawals
Despite these events, Binance announced that customers deposited more than $1 billion after the exchange resumed transactions for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies. This activity led to a net outflow of approximately $3.64 billion.
According to Binance, the considerable withdrawals represent merely 2.1% of its total assets, which stand at $171 billion. Binance co-founder Yi He expressed on social media, “Our top priority right now is to ensure the environment is secure, after which users can withdraw their funds, and Binance can resume operations.”
Details of the Cyberattack
The cyberattack resulted in a staggering $6.3 billion theft of digital assets. As reported, $3 billion of the stolen cryptocurrencies have since been frozen, which enables certain crypto issuers to prevent the movement of their tokens internationally.
The group responsible for this breach, identified by the FBI as “TraderTraitor,” is also suspected of having carried out a previous attack in February 2025 on another exchange, Bybit, resulting in losses of $1.5 billion. The FBI has noted that TraderTraitor has been converting most of the stolen assets into Ethereum in an attempt to obscure their activity.
Guidance and Recovery Efforts
In light of the attack, the FBI has issued guidance to private-sector entities, urging them to block transactions from the addresses associated with TraderTraitor that are being used to launder the stolen funds. Binance has committed to covering the entirety of the losses incurred, utilizing company resources, and had already accounted for around 95% of the affected amount by early Sunday morning.
Conclusion
The situation continues to develop as Binance works to enhance its security measures and reassure its user base. The exchange remains a pivotal player in the cryptocurrency market, serving over 300 million users worldwide.
