bitcoin++ Announces Antarctica: Cold Storage Edition Conference
In a unique blend of technology and adventure, developers in the Bitcoin community are set to converge in one of the most remote locations on Earth. Scheduled from January 24 to February 5, 2028, the bitcoin++ event, dubbed Antarctica: Cold Storage Edition, will take place against the stunning backdrop of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Conference Overview
This innovative gathering will take place aboard an expedition ship departing from Ushuaia, Argentina. The itinerary includes traversing the challenging Drake Passage and exploring key sites along the Antarctic Peninsula. Limited to just 22 attendees, this event offers a unique opportunity to engage with fellow developers in a setting designed for both technical conferences and outdoor exploration.
Cold Storage Concept
Reflecting on the principles of Bitcoin’s cold storage—keeping private keys offline—the conference aims to foster deeper discussions in a setting that invites both practicality and camaraderie. The organizers describe this trip as a chance to engage in conversations that might otherwise happen in the corridors of traditional conferences but with the added thrill of the Antarctic landscape.
Participation and Structure
The conference will utilize an unconference format, allowing attendees to propose topics for discussion, presentations, and demonstrations. Information sharing will be supported by onboard Starlink connectivity and a dedicated room for spontaneous hackathons and collaborative sessions.
Journey Details
The expedition lasts for 13 days and includes a variety of activities such as kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, and Zodiac outings to key locations like Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay. The exact stops will depend on weather and ice conditions, providing a true expedition experience where nature dictates the program.
Registration and Costs
Those interested in participating can now register, with cabin prices ranging from $14,900 for a shared four-person cabin to $16,700 for a shared two-person cabin. Participants have the option to pay in five installments or a single upfront payment. A discount of 5% is available for payments made in Bitcoin.
Included in the fare are parkas for the cold Antarctic climate. It’s important to note that medical, evacuation, and repatriation insurance are required and must be purchased separately by attendees.
Sponsorship Opportunities
Companies looking to gain visibility can sponsor the expedition by placing their brands on the parkas worn by participants. Sponsorship packages start at $5,000 and can go up to $25,000, covering approximately 22 parkas.
This expedition does not travel to the geographic South Pole but focuses on the captivating Antarctic Peninsula, making it a striking venue for exploration and professional development.
Looking Ahead
Since its inception in Austin in 2022, bitcoin++ has organized numerous events worldwide, including cities like Berlin, Florianópolis, and Seoul, each with a unique focus. The upcoming conference in Seoul, themed “privacy edition,” is slated for November 5 and 6, 2026, further demonstrating the organization’s commitment to fostering a vibrant community of Bitcoin developers.
