Meanwhile Secures $37.5 Million in Funding for Bitcoin Life Insurance
Meanwhile, a pioneering life insurance company operating entirely in Bitcoin, has recently announced the successful raising of $37.5 million in a funding round led by Bain Capital Crypto. This round saw contributions from various prominent investors, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. With this latest investment, Meanwhile’s overall funding has surpassed $180 million, bolstered by backing from notable figures such as Sam Altman.
Growing Demand for Bitcoin Insurance Policies
The funding round comes in response to an increasing demand for Bitcoin life insurance products, particularly in regions outside the United States, including Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The rise in interest is attributed to broader economic instability.
“Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin. What they haven’t had is a regulated way to pass it on,” stated Zac Townsend, Meanwhile’s co-founder and CEO. He further elaborated, “Brokers came to us because their clients kept asking. This round lets us keep up with them.”
Innovative Insurance Products for High-Net-Worth Clients
In early 2026, Meanwhile introduced its BTC Life 1-Pay policy, which is a single-premium whole life insurance product tailored for affluent clients outside of the U.S. This new offering follows the company’s initial product line, BTC 10-Pay, specifically designed for American taxpayers.
With BTC Life 1-Pay, customers make a one-time premium payment in Bitcoin and are guaranteed a death benefit in Bitcoin for life. The policy’s value appreciates in Bitcoin, and after the first year, clients have the option to borrow up to 90% of the policy’s value without a fixed repayment schedule or margin calls.
The flexibility of the policies allows ownership by individuals, trusts, or corporations, thereby enhancing their suitability for succession and estate planning purposes.
Expanding Partnerships and Client Base
Since its inception, Meanwhile has engaged with 15 brokers that cater to wealthy families in various regions, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE, and Switzerland. Partnerships with firms like Lioner, an insurance and family office group, and Apeiron Group, which specializes in high-net-worth life insurance, have further solidified its market presence.
Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group, noted, “We’re reaching a turning point where more high-net-worth clients are asking not just how to hold Bitcoin and digital assets, but how to plan around them and ultimately transfer that wealth to the next generation.”
Positive Growth Projections
Meanwhile has reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already exceeded last year’s total and is on pace to more than double in the upcoming year. Specific financial figures, however, have not been disclosed.
Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto, commented on the company’s growth, stating, “Meanwhile owns every layer of a regulated life insurer and builds it like an AI-enabled startup. The growth this year proves the model, and we’re glad to back them again.”
Regulatory Approvals and Financial Framework
The operating entity of Meanwhile, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited, was granted the first Class IILT license by the Bermuda Monetary Authority in July 2024 after two years navigating the regulatory sandbox. This licensed structure emphasizes compliance and regulatory integrity in the rapidly evolving landscape of cryptocurrency and insurance.
All financial statements, reserves, and policyholder balances are held in Bitcoin, with funds managed through regulated institutional custodians.
