Bitcoin’s Bullish Momentum: Insights from James E. Thorne
Chart Analysis Reveals Bullish Configuration
James E. Thorne, Chief Market Strategist at Wellington-Altus, recently highlighted a significant bullish trend for Bitcoin (BTC) on the weekly chart. He characterized the recent price movement as part of a “Super Cycle,” driven by the upward turn of two critical moving averages.
Thorne noted that after declining from its peak in 2025, Bitcoin found support at the 200-week moving average, which has allowed the asset to stretch its long-term uptrend. According to him, Bitcoin’s weekly chart is among the most promising in the current market landscape.
Since hitting a low in June, both the 30-week and 40-week exponential moving averages have shifted from a downward trend to an upward trajectory, indicating a recovery in Bitcoin’s price.
Transition from Bearish to Bullish Sentiments
Thorne emphasized the importance of this shift, marking it as a transition from a bearish to a bullish intermediate trend. He remarked, “Weekly momentum is confirming, not diverging,” highlighting consistent positive indicators on the market.
Shifting Market Dynamics
Thorne articulated that recent regulatory developments, including the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins Act (GENIUS Act), are ushering Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies away from speculative trading into fundamental roles within the financial system.
He pointed out advancements such as tokenized Treasuries, on-chain settlements, and regulated stablecoins, which are providing a more substantial demand compared to the previous cycle, warranting the description of the current phase as a “Super Cycle.”
Macroeconomic Conditions and Federal Reserve Policies
Thorne also noted favorable macroeconomic conditions, pointing out the entering of markets into the most robust period of the four-year presidential cycle, which historically corresponds with improved equity returns.
He commented on signs of growth in productivity, wages, and manufacturing jobs, while also asserting that inflation has eased despite supply chain disruptions caused by tariffs and oil price increases. He described the Federal Reserve’s tightening of policy as a “policy mistake,” particularly given their recent decision to raise the target rate range to 3.75%-4.00%—the first increase since 2023. Thorne indicated that markets are already preemptively factoring in this rate hike.
He concluded by stating that Bitcoin’s price maintaining its long-term average, coupled with improving structural demand, marks a very promising environment for the cryptocurrency.
Current Trading Landscape and Sentiment
As of now, Bitcoin’s trading price stands at $85,200, reflecting a 0.8% increase over the past 24 hours. However, retail sentiment around Bitcoin on Stocktwits remains bearish, with discussions about the cryptocurrency witnessing a significant decline in volume—dropping 24% over the past week.
Furthermore, data from Coinglass indicated that pressure points for leveraged positions are focused around $84,100. A shift in Bitcoin’s price could potentially incite forced liquidations, depending on market movements above or below this threshold.
