Blizzard Reinforces Anti-RMT Policy in World of Warcraft: Classic

Recent Developments

Blizzard Entertainment’s Community Manager, Kaivax, has reiterated the company’s firm stance against real money trading (RMT) in World of Warcraft. In a recent forum post, he announced the introduction of a warning system that alerts players when they are about to accept large gold trades from unknown individuals. Kaivax clearly stated, “Our stance on RMT in World of Warcraft is crystal clear: any account belonging to any player that is found to have participated in generating, selling, buying, or receiving illicit gold is subject to the gold being removed, account suspensions, or permanent account closures.”

Challenges with Gold Selling

Since its launch, World of Warcraft: Classic has struggled with gold selling issues. The introduction of GDKP (Gold Dkp System) allowed players to bid gold for items dropped during raids, saturating the in-game economy with illicitly generated wealth. Blizzard’s initial lax enforcement of RMT policies contributed to significant economic imbalances.

Changes Under ‘Forever’

With the forthcoming release of World of Warcraft: Forever, Blizzard has taken proactive measures, including banning the GDKP system. This decision aims to create a more balanced experience for players. However, the risk of RMT activity remains a concern, as players with disposable incomes might still exploit the system unless enforcement regulations are tightened.

Streamers Facing Consequences

Recent days have seen several popular streamers facing repercussions for potential RMT involvement during the Forever beta. Notably, streamer Ziqo experienced a significant reduction in his gold after Blizzard reclaimed funds, leaving him with only 9 silver, which was insufficient for travel within the game.

Conversely, another streamer, Payo, suffered a ban on one of his accounts due to promoting gold selling, even as he claimed he had “never bought gold” himself. In a striking contradiction, the day prior, he urged his audience to purchase gold on his behalf. Despite his ban, Payo quickly established another account to participate in an upcoming $100,000 tournament.

Conclusion

Blizzard’s active stance against RMT and its recent actions against streamers highlight the company’s commitment to maintaining a fair economy within World of Warcraft. With the official launch of World of Warcraft: Forever approaching on November 4, the hope is that the game will avoid the economic pitfalls that plagued its predecessor. Blizzard is also making efforts to address other community concerns, such as the regulation of inappropriate in-game names.
