Bitcoin Outperforms Gold: Insights from ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood
Bitcoin’s Recent Performance Surge
Since August 16, Bitcoin (BTC) has significantly outperformed gold, with gains exceeding 33%, while gold has experienced a decline of over 4%. Cathie Wood, CEO of ARK Invest, noted in a recent episode of her series “In the Know” that this shift indicates a turning point for Bitcoin relative to gold.
Shifting Dynamics: Bitcoin vs. Gold
Wood characterized the recent changes in the Bitcoin-to-gold ratio as a “very nice turn,” highlighting Bitcoin’s upward trajectory contrasted with gold’s downward movement. Currently, Bitcoin’s price is hovering over $85,200, reflecting a slight increase of 0.7% within the past 24 hours.
Despite the positive price movement, retail sentiment regarding Bitcoin on Stocktwits remains in the ‘bearish’ zone, with recent activity levels noted to be lower than usual.
Correlation Trends: A Negative Shift
An essential aspect of this performance shift is the changing correlation between Bitcoin and gold. Wood referred to ARK’s long-term analysis, revealing a correlation coefficient of approximately 0.1 between the two assets—indicating minimal association. She emphasized a recent development where this correlation has transitioned to negative territory, suggesting that Bitcoin and gold may be trending in opposite directions.
Financial Institutions’ Outlook on Bitcoin
Wall Street analysts have become increasingly optimistic about Bitcoin’s prospects. Notably, Citi has raised its 12-month price target for Bitcoin to $113,000, which is an adjustment from earlier cuts made this year. This target, however, remains below its historical high, reached in October 2025 when the price surpassed $126,000.
Future of Gold: Potential Decline Ahead
Wood expressed concerns regarding gold’s trajectory, linking its peak performance to strategic decisions made during Donald Trump’s presidency, particularly the appointment of Kevin Warsh as the Federal Reserve Chair. She anticipates further declines in gold and reiterated that ongoing inflationary trends could impact its value.
Furthermore, she referenced the latest Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) report indicating a year-over-year inflation rate of 3.4% as of August, down from 3.7%. Wood pointed out that a private inflation gauge, Trueflation, suggests a continued decrease in core inflation, which may influence future monetary policies.
Tom Lee, chairman of BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR), mentioned that a refined approach to the PCE could lead to decreased core inflation readings, signifying that any premature Federal Reserve tightening could prove beneficial for the cryptocurrency sector.
