Chinese Prosecutors Target $5.7 Billion Fraud Case Linked to Bitcoin
Overview of the Fraud Case
Chinese prosecutors have initiated the process to seize over 61,800 Bitcoin associated with a extensive fraud case that amassed an estimated 40 billion yuan, equivalent to approximately $5.7 billion. This notable development has been reported by the Chinese news outlet The Paper.
Details of the Allegations
The case revolves around Qian Zhimin, who is identified as the alleged mastermind behind Tianjin Lantian Gree Electronic Technology. Prosecutors claim that from 2014 to 2017, the company engaged in selling unauthorized wealth-management products throughout China. These products promised guaranteed returns, attracting over 102,000 investors and raising approximately 40.378 billion yuan.
However, nearly 20 billion yuan was reportedly lost by the investors involved. Instead of creating legitimate business opportunities, the funds raised were allegedly diverted to:
- Pay back previous investors
- Finance fictitious investment projects
- Purchase Bitcoin, as well as real estate, luxury vehicles, and jewelry
Flight and Asset Seizure
Following the exposure of the fraudulent activities, Qian Zhimin fled China in 2017 and eventually established residence in the United Kingdom. British law enforcement authorities took action, seizing his assets which included the significant stockpile of Bitcoin, along with various other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin SV, Ripple, and Dogecoin, in addition to cash, valuables, and investment holdings.
