Reflections on Hollister: A Community in Transition

A Journey Back to My Roots
In 1971, my husband and I relocated to Hollister when he accepted a position as a teacher and football coach at San Benito High School. After spending thirty-five years in this vibrant community, we ventured to Eugene, Oregon, for eighteen years. However, Hollister remained a significant part of my identity. Following my husband’s passing, I decided to come “home,” and I have resided here for the past two years.
The Changing Landscape of Hollister
The transformation of Hollister over the years has been profound. While some changes have been positive, many have not met the community’s needs effectively. The state’s mandate for rural areas to develop new housing led to a rapid influx of residences without the necessary infrastructure to support such growth. This has culminated in a financial crisis stemming from years of mismanagement at various governmental levels.
Nostalgia for the Past
I often find myself longing for the Hollister of 40 to 50 years ago. If it were possible, I’d wish for a magic solution to address the current challenges facing our town. It is disheartening to observe ongoing disputes and the tendency to assign blame to previous and current leaders alike, whether for creating the issues or for attempting to resolve them. What Hollister truly requires is leadership from individuals who have a genuine love and commitment to the community.
Hope for the Future
While we navigate this challenging financial landscape, it is my hope that Hollister can regain its status as a flourishing community reminiscent of its past.
