Incident Overview
Authorities identified the shooter as a 45-year-old man, who was connected to seven of the eight victims, with the last victim being a friend of the pregnant woman. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah shared details regarding the sequence of events leading to this tragedy during a news conference.
Events Leading to the Shooting
Investigators recovered video and audio evidence indicating that muffled gunfire was detected inside the home shortly before two women attempted to seek help by knocking on the door at around 5 p.m. on Friday. Upon encountering the shooter outside, they were shot as they fled, according to Chief Lorah.
Law Enforcement Response
Upon arrival, police officers found the two women deceased outside the home. Further investigation revealed the bodies of a 5-year-old boy, a 1-year-old girl, two women, and two young men inside the property, along with the gunman. Chief Lorah exercised sensitivity concerning the scene’s details, stating, “Out of respect for the victims and the families, I will not discuss the details of what our officers encountered inside that home.”
Ongoing Investigation
While the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, officials are conducting interviews with other relatives and plan to investigate the cellphones of the women who were killed outside the residence. Chief Lorah noted, “They knew something was going on at that house. We have to figure out what that is.”
