In Search of Privacy: Charles Hoskinson Challenges Ethereum’s Approach
Redefining the World Computer Concept
Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano (ADA), recently voiced skepticism regarding Ethereum’s concept of a “world computer.” He emphasized that personal data should be safeguarded rather than exposed on a public blockchain. “What they got wrong with this idea of one giant shared world computer. Computers are personal,” he stated, underscoring the importance of privacy in the digital age.
The Privacy Challenge
Hoskinson highlighted growing concerns about public blockchains inadvertently revealing personal information about users. He raised critical questions about privacy, asking, “Do people want everyone to see what you buy, who you talk to, forever?” This issue, he argued, becomes even more significant with the increasing use of artificial intelligence, which relies heavily on personal data.
Expressing his unease about sharing sensitive data with leaders in tech, such as Sam Altman of OpenAI and Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Hoskinson emphasized that users should maintain control over their information.
Introducing Midnight: A Privacy-Centric Solution
In response to these privacy concerns, Hoskinson has introduced what he calls the “night frame,” a personal computing solution built on the Midnight (NIGHT) privacy network developed alongside Cardano. Midnight offers a trio of innovative tools:
- Zero-Knowledge Proofs: Allowing users to verify outcomes without disclosing underlying details.
- Multi-Party Computation: Enables multiple parties to compute data without revealing their inputs.
- Trusted Execution Environments: Execute code within a secure area of a chip, ensuring that “what goes in, no one else can see,” as Hoskinson concluded.
Upcoming Launch of Midnight City
Looking ahead, Hoskinson announced that Midnight City, a simulated environment where AI agents can interact, will become fully operational within the next few months. This innovative platform currently boasts approximately 14,000 beta testers and will facilitate users hosting AI agents with unique wallets and identities. These agents will have the capability to rent trading strategies and interact with various blockchain networks, including Solana (SOL), Ethereum (ETH), Hyperliquid (HYPE), and Binance (BNB).
Warnings and Outlook for Cryptocurrency
Hoskinson also cautioned that the cryptocurrency industry could risk regaining control by Wall Street if it remains focused only on incremental enhancements in speed and fees. He urged developers to envision and create a “crypto-native civilization” that empowers users and diminishes reliance on traditional financial institutions. He downplayed the idea of rivalry among different blockchain networks, suggesting that users should not be burdened by the specifics of which network processes their transactions.
Market Performance: A Decline in Token Prices
Despite the promising developments in privacy solutions, the market has seen a downturn for key tokens this week:
- Midnight (NIGHT) has fallen 19.3%, trading around $0.0401.
- Cardano (ADA) has decreased by 13.1%, now priced at approximately $0.2158.
- Ethereum (ETH) experienced a 6.7% drop to about $2,372.
Recent retail sentiment on platforms such as Stocktwits indicates a bearish outlook for NIGHT and ADA, while Ethereum remains in an ‘extremely bearish’ zone.
