Family of Woman Fatally Shot by ICE Officer Files Civil Lawsuits

The family of Renee Good, who was tragically shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis in January, has initiated legal action against several parties, including the federal government and individual federal agents.

Details of the Incident

On January 7, Renee Good was shot by ICE officer Jonathan Ross during an engagement in the city. The incident has sparked significant public discourse surrounding federal law enforcement practices and accountability.

Legal Actions Taken

The family’s legal representative filed two separate lawsuits:

  • First Complaint: This lawsuit identifies the United States government as the primary defendant, alleging wrongful death under Minnesota law. The claims include charges of “battery, assault, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligence” that the family contends contributed to Good’s death.
  • Second Complaint: The second lawsuit targets several key figures, including ICE officer Jonathan Ross, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, and former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. This suit argues that these individuals conspired to infringe upon civil rights, particularly affecting the Somali and Hispanic communities, and attempted to silence those who support these groups.

Family Advocacy and Congressional Testimony

The urgency of these legal actions comes in the wake of public testimonies delivered by Good’s family. Her mother, Donna Ganger, and her brother, Brent Ganger, recently took their case to Congress, participating in a joint hearing focused on fatal shootings executed by federal immigration officers over the past two years.

Looking Ahead

As the legal process unfolds, the family remains committed to seeking justice for Renee Good. They also emphasize raising awareness about the broader implications of such incidents on immigrant communities. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
