Stone Mountain Woman Indicted for Alleged Bank Fraud Scheme

A woman from Stone Mountain, Georgia, has been arrested and indicted on federal charges for her alleged involvement in defrauding Ameris Bank of over $900,000 while employed as a universal banker.

The Allegations Against Mercedes Henry

Mercedes Henry, a 35-year-old resident of Stone Mountain, reportedly exploited her position at Ameris Bank during a short timeframe between September and November 2021. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, she is accused of unlawfully accessing sensitive information belonging to six customers.

Method of Operation

Authorities claim that Henry linked the victims’ bank accounts to the cryptocurrency exchange platform Coinbase without obtaining their consent. Once these accounts were connected, both Henry and her alleged accomplices transferred approximately $931,000 from these bank accounts to Coinbase accounts that they controlled.

In return for her actions, Henry is believed to have received over $1,000, although the total amount of her ill-gotten gains has not been disclosed by investigators.

Legal Proceedings

On September 25, Henry appeared in federal court following her arrest, where a grand jury indicted her on several charges, including bank fraud, access device fraud, and bribery. U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg commented on the seriousness of the offenses, stating, “Henry allegedly stole sensitive information to facilitate nearly $1 million of fraudulent transfers from victims’ bank accounts to cryptocurrency accounts controlled by her co-conspirators.” He emphasized the commitment of law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute individuals who engage in such fraudulent activities.

Current Status of the Investigation

The investigation into the case is ongoing and is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Further Information

For those interested in the legal repercussions of financial crimes involving banks and cryptocurrency platforms, the case serves as a critical reminder of the vulnerabilities within bank security and the importance of protecting customer information.
