Brian Idalski: A Commitment to Team Success at Syracuse Women’s Ice Hockey

With a coaching career featuring over 400 victories, Brian Idalski has quickly made an impact as the head coach of the women’s ice hockey program at Syracuse University. Guiding the team to a promising 6-2 start, including a remarkable overtime victory against No. 4 Penn State, Idalski emphasizes the importance of team unity and commitment to a shared goal.

Building a Foundation of Excellence

Idalski has established himself as a mentor to some of the best talents in women’s hockey, having played a critical role in developing 10 Olympians and numerous all-conference athletes throughout his 25-year coaching journey. Previously coaching at prominent institutions like North Dakota, St. Cloud State, and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, he focuses on honing his players’ skills and promoting a strong work ethic both on and off the ice.

“My former players would say that I’m demanding, but that I care. That I’m not afraid to spend the time, that if they’re willing to work hard, I’ll put in the time to help them be better,” states Idalski, showcasing his commitment to player development and success.

Syracuse: A New Challenge

Idalski’s choice to lead Syracuse’s program stems from its potential within the Power Five conferences, where opportunities for women’s hockey are limited. He sees a strong legacy to build on, indicating that the program has the ingredients for greater success.

”There’s not many Power Five conference teams that have a women’s program, and there is a fair amount of potential that goes along with that,” he explains, underscoring the unique opportunity presented by the role. Idalski also expressed excitement about working under Bryan Blair, Syracuse’s new athletic director, noting his inspirational energy and vision for the department as key factors in his decision.

From Player to Coach

Idalski’s journey in hockey began at a young age, fueled by a supportive family, particularly his father, Don. His early experiences on the ice weren’t without struggle, as he recalls, “I spent more time lying on the ice than anything else.” However, his determination and passion for the game laid the groundwork for a successful career that led him to play professionally and coach at various levels.

Commitment to Player Development

In his role as head coach, Idalski prioritizes both academics and athletics, understanding that his players aspire to succeed in multiple arenas. “You have to want to be excellent academically and also on the ice. Creating that balance is important for me and for our program,” he asserts. He seeks student-athletes who possess a competitive spirit and a desire for continuous improvement.

Under his guidance, the Orange aim to embody a relentless approach to their playing style, characterized by strong defensive pressure and physicality. “We can control our effort, our energy, and our passion to pursue pucks and be physical,” he states, reinforcing the core values he instills in his team.

Looking Ahead

With the Orange off to their best start in program history and currently receiving votes in the USCHO Division I Women’s Poll, the future looks bright for Syracuse women’s ice hockey. Idalski and his team will continue their campaign against Delaware, with games scheduled on October 29 and 30 at the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
