Google Health Enhances Activity Tracking with Latest Update
Google Health is introducing a significant upgrade to its activity tracking capabilities through the latest version 5.11 of its mobile app. This enhancement follows the announcement of the Fitbit Edge, which will now support improved automatic activity detection.
Expanded Activity Recognition
The update allows the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch series (specifically models 3, 4, and 5) to identify over 100 activities, a significant increase from the previous detection of just 10. Among the activities now tracked are:
- Cardio workouts
- Golf
- High-intensity training
- Racket sports
- Strength workouts
- Swimming
- Team sports
Smart Learning Capabilities
The Fitbit Edge’s functionality is set to improve as it utilizes a combination of workout data, historical trends, manual inputs, and location data (subject to user permission) to enhance activity predictions. This means that workouts that demonstrate a sustained elevated heart rate and meet specific duration requirements will be automatically recorded. Users will receive summary notifications detailing their activities typically within 30 minutes of completion.
Improved Accuracy and User Engagement
According to Google, this new system is expected to yield “nearly 2x more accurate detections,” as well as significantly reduce the number of missed workouts by over 50%. When users confirm or adjust their logged activities, the application learns from these inputs, refining its behavior for future activity detection.
Availability of the Update
The expanded activity detection feature has started rolling out with Google Health version 5.11 and is available on iOS as well as gradually on Android devices. Upon updating, users will encounter a prompt titled “Expanded activity detection, built to learn,” establishing the new features at their fingertips.
