Google Home Speaker Data Consumption Issue: What You Need to Know

Overview of the Issue
Recent reports indicate that some users of the Google Home Speaker are experiencing an unusual and excessive consumption of data. This issue has raised concerns among owners as the device appears to be continuously downloading large amounts of data from Google’s servers.
User Experiences
One reported case highlighted a Google Home Speaker that went unused for a day yet managed to download approximately 17 GB of data within a 24-hour period. Alarmingly, at around 3 a.m. PT, the device alone downloaded nearly 10 GB. Such spikes in data use may relate to unsuccessful attempts to obtain firmware updates.
On October 13, this speaker collected an even larger total of 41 GB of data. Over the past month, the cumulative data download reached about 132 GB, raising questions about potential issues with the device.
Variability in Data Usage
Interestingly, not all Google Home Speakers are exhibiting this problem. For instance, another unit located in a different household showed a modest data consumption of only 2 GB over a similar time frame. This discrepancy suggests that the issue may not be universal.
Monitoring Data Usage
Users can track their device’s data consumption through their router settings. For those with Nest Wifi, data usage can be reviewed via the Google Home app by navigating to the Wifi tab, selecting Devices, and accessing the device usage graphs. This feature allows users to view data usage over periods of 1, 7, or 30 days.
Impact and Company Response
This significant data consumption could lead to exceeding data caps for users on limited plans, prompting more significant worries about service interruptions and additional charges. Fortunately, in a recent statement, Google acknowledged the problem and assured users that “a fix is already rolling out that should address this for users.”
