The Gaming Landscape as We Approach The Game Awards 2026
Upcoming Awards and Popular Titles
With just under two months remaining until The Game Awards 2026, the gaming industry has witnessed an impressive array of titles this year. Top contenders include Resident Evil Requiem, Forza Horizon 6, Slay the Spire II, Blood of Dawnwalker, and Control Resonant.
Recent Game of the Year Winners and Their Revenue
This year’s excitement also prompts a look back at the Game of the Year (GOTY) winners from the past four years. Notably, Elden Ring (2022), Baldur’s Gate 3 (2023), Astro Bot (2024), and Expedition 33 (2025) have collectively amassed an impressive revenue of $3.8 billion from approximately 73 million copies sold.
Elden Ring: A Continued Success
Elden Ring remains a landmark title in the gaming world. As of now, it has sold around 36.4 million copies, with a distribution of 50% on Steam, 35% on PlayStation 5, and 15% on Xbox. Notably, the game recently achieved another significant milestone of generating over $2 billion in revenue.
Sales data indicates that while the distribution of copies sold leans heavily toward console platforms, they account for a larger share of overall revenue due to differing market pricing strategies. For instance, approximately 17.4% of Steam copies were purchased in China, reflecting the game’s lower price point in that market.
Furthermore, over 9.8 million players have invested more than 100 hours into the game, highlighting its deep engagement. Achievement data reveals that 10.9% of PlayStation players have earned the platinum trophy, with a slight lower percentage on Steam at 10.5%, and 3.9% on Xbox.
Notable Trends from the GOTY Winners
Baldur’s Gate 3 has marked its territory as another standout title, surpassing 23.2 million copies sold and generating over $1.2 billion in revenue. The game saw about 80.6% of its sales come from Steam, while the PlayStation and Xbox sales contributed lesser shares.
Meanwhile, Astro Bot, the 2024 GOTY winner, has sold around 4.7 million copies with a revenue close to $291 million. Its sales strategy has capitalized significantly on the family demographic, resulting in high physical sales, which account for approximately 46.6% of total sales.
Lastly, Expedition 33, the current winner, saw substantial success with 8.7 million copies sold and approximately $366 million generated, aided significantly by its launch on Game Pass.
Looking Forward
The gaming industry’s trajectory suggests an evolving landscape where titles modest in production costs can compete against larger-budget launches. With many engaging games released and the high anticipation around GTA 6, the upcoming months promise to be eventful.
As we anticipate the upcoming Game Awards, it’s clear that the focus on quality gameplay continues to drive sales and player engagement, equipping the gaming industry with promising prospects moving forward.
