The Tragic Disappearance and Murder of Mike Harding

The tranquil lake country along the Kentucky-Tennessee border experienced a harrowing event in September 2022, when Mike Harding, a transplant from California, vanished without a trace. This case would unfold into a shocking narrative involving hidden motives and a tragic conclusion.

Urgent Calls for Help

Mike Harding’s wife, Julie Harding, served as a captain with the California Highway Patrol. Concerned for her husband’s safety, she diligently reached out to Kentucky law enforcement from their home in Sacramento.

JULIE HARDING (phone call): “I can’t get any information. And I just, I need your help with this… My concern right now… is where he is. Is he OK?”

Through her persistent efforts, she connected with Clay County Sheriff Brandon Boone, who was leading the investigation. However, Julie faced frustration with the lack of information.

SHERIFF BRANDON BOONE: “She got very angry with a couple of my people, because we wouldn’t disclose certain information to her.”

Seeking answers, Julie arrived at Boone’s office in person, apologizing for her previous demeanor.

JULIE HARDING (bodycam): “Let me first apologize. My tone was inappropriate…”

A Grievous Discovery

Hours before a major breakthrough, a family searching for a new home stumbled upon a horrific scene in Burkesville, Kentucky. David Hammersley discovered a pickup truck inside a vacant property and heard alarming noises.

DAVID HAMMERSLEY: “I heard this awful screech and, ‘Oh, it’s terrible. There’s something dead over here!’”

As he approached, he encountered the body of Mike Harding, laying on the floor, having succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

ANN MARIE GORDON ANDERSON, Prosecutor: “It seemed like he had probably been there for a week, from September 19th to the 26th.”

Unraveling the Mystery

Initial investigations indicated that Mike had been shot four times, but key evidence was missing, including the murder weapon. However, one distinctive shell casing linked to a Hornady Critical Defense bullet was found at the crime scene.

Meanwhile, Mike’s son, Steven, and daughter, Heather, were devastated by the news of their father’s untimely death.

STEVEN HARDING: “There’s really no words for it other than your best friend is gone.”

While investigators delved into Mike’s phone records, they discovered troubling patterns that hinted he had been lured to the property. Text messages revealed an exchange with someone posing as a realtor named James Fraser, who was never found.

DETECTIVE BJ BURTON: “He thought he was going there for… a heating and air service call.”

The Dark Side of Love

Michael’s relationship with Julie was scrutinized as investigators uncovered a tumultuous romantic history. Their marriage, which began in 2019, transformed into a contentious situation as Julie filed for divorce in May 2022, leading to increased tension regarding finances and trust.

Julie, initially described as deeply in love, began displaying signs of distress and paranoia about Mike, reportedly claiming he was involved in dangerous activities.

Sgt. Brian Wittmer: “She was scared of him… saying he was potentially dealing ghost guns, drugs.”

Mike’s friends reported a noticeable shift in his demeanor, with growing fears for his safety. He even installed chains and padlocks on his doors after claiming someone had broken into his home.

SHERIFF BRANDON BOONE: “After seeing the locks and the chains around the door, you really think, whoa, you know, he was afraid of something.”

Unraveling the Conspiracy

Despite the lack of solid evidence against Julie, police continued their investigation. They discovered numerous phone calls between her and Thomas O’Donnell, a former car salesman who had relocated to California.

Prosecutors theorized that O’Donnell was involved in planning Mike’s murder, posing as the realtor to lure him to the crime scene.

Final Days and Arrests

In a tragic turn of events, on December 10, 2022, Julie Harding was found dead near her home, with evidence suggesting she died by suicide. A blood-stained note revealed her troubled mindset.

Detective BJ Burton: “It was just bizarre… almost like she was obsessed with somehow trying to get back at Michael Harding.”

As O’Donnell faced murder charges, the connection with Julie Harding remained circumstantial. While she was arrested for trespassing following an incident involving Mike’s dog, no charges were filed against her regarding the murder.

Trial and Sentencing

The trial of Thomas O’Donnell began in April 2026, resulting in his conviction for the murder of Mike Harding. While the prosecution aimed to prove a conspiracy fueled by financial and emotional turmoil, the defense cast doubt on the investigation.

JUDGE DAVID WILLIAMS: “We, the jury, agree by a unanimous vote that the defendant Thomas O’Donnell is guilty of the offense of murder.”

As O’Donnell received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 20 years, the Harding family grappled with the complexities of loss. Steven and Heather expressed their lingering grief for their father, emphasizing his loving nature and the void left by his tragic demise.

STEVEN HARDING: “He died before my 30th birthday…29 years isn’t enough.”
