Peter Schiff Raises Concerns Over Strategy’s Ability to Fund Bitcoin Purchases
Peter Schiff, a well-known critic of cryptocurrency, has expressed skepticism regarding Strategy’s ongoing capacity to finance its Bitcoin acquisitions. During a recent podcast episode, Schiff shed light on the current financial landscape surrounding Strategy and its funding methods.
Funding Challenges Highlighted by Schiff
Schiff pointed out that Strategy’s preferred stock, known as STRC, has recently risen to approximately $99.40, nearing its par value of $100. This uptick can be attributed to consistent buyback activities and Bitcoin’s price surge, which escalated from about $60,000 to over $80,000, helping to restore some confidence in the market.
However, Schiff argues that this recovery does not fundamentally address the core issue. He emphasized that, without the ability to sell more STRC shares, Strategy cannot generate the necessary funds to sustain large-scale Bitcoin purchases. While he acknowledged that a larger cash reserve enables the company to pay dividends on its STRC for an extended period, he stated, “they don’t have that machine to buy more Bitcoin.”
Moreover, Schiff warned of potential volatility in Bitcoin prices, particularly if technology stocks experience a downturn, which could undermine confidence in the financial structure supporting Bitcoin investments.
Recent Developments from Strategy
In a filing on Monday, Strategy reported purchasing 334 Bitcoins between October 1 and October 4 at an average price of $85,839 per coin. The funding details for these acquisitions were as follows:
- Bitcoin Purchase Total: $28.7 million
- Funding Sources:
- $15.7 million from the sale of 92,894 MSTR shares
- $13 million in cash reserves
- STRC Buybacks: $176.3 million spent on repurchasing 1.77 million shares from September 28 to October 4
This report presents a dual perspective: while Strategy did acquire Bitcoin, the amount—334 coins—represents a fraction of the 1,665 Bitcoins purchased the week prior, according to Benzinga. Furthermore, the company allocated more resources to repurchase STRC shares than to Bitcoin acquisitions.
Despite these challenges, as of the recent filing, Strategy maintains a solid financial cushion, with reserves totaling $4.88 billion and an additional $833.4 million in cash, providing the necessary support for its dividend commitments.
Market Analysis and Support Levels for MSTR
For those monitoring MSTR’s market performance, here are the key levels to watch:
- Resistance Level: $170
- Initial Support Level: $156
- Deeper Support Level (20-day EMA): $148
As the market continues to evolve, all eyes remain on Strategy’s next moves and the broader implications for Bitcoin investment strategies.
