Jack Smith Denies Attendance at NBA Game During Senate Hearing

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith faced intense scrutiny during a recent Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, particularly from Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri. The line of questioning centered around Smith’s alleged presence at an NBA game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Golden State Warriors held in Atlanta in early February 2024.

Context of the Inquiry

Senator Schmitt indicated the significance of Smith’s potential attendance at this game, coinciding with the disclosure by Fani Willis, the Fulton County District Attorney, that she had a personal relationship with Nathan Wade. Wade was appointed as a special prosecutor to investigate alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. This connection raised questions about possible conflicts of interest.

Smith’s Response and Evidence Presented

In his testimony, Smith firmly denied attending the NBA game, stating, “I definitely did not go” to an Atlanta Hawks game. He did, however, acknowledge the possibility of having passed through Atlanta on his way to Florida. Additionally, Smith clarified that he did not have any meetings with Wade or Willis during his tenure as special counsel.

Senator Schmitt presented evidence to support his claim, revealing a poster board featuring text messages from Smith’s team. One message inquired whether “109 Row 1” was reserved for Smith, suggesting he had been in Atlanta at that time. The senator stated, “I don’t think you know that we have this stuff, so I’ll give you a second to process it so you don’t, you know, perjure yourself,” implying serious accusations against Smith.

Clarification on Attendance at Sporting Events

Following the intense exchange, which included Schmitt labeling Smith a “total dirtbag,” Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, urged for transparency regarding the text messages. When these messages were shown again during the hearing, Smith disclosed that he had actually attended a women’s college basketball game on the same date, specifically featuring the University of Maryland Terrapins against the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, to see star player Caitlin Clark. This game took place in College Park, Maryland.

Klobuchar’s Commentary

Senator Klobuchar pointed out the misunderstanding, suggesting that Schmitt might have confused the names of the teams—the Hawkeyes for the Hawks. She emphasized the severity of a U.S. senator making incorrect insinuations that could mislead the public. Klobuchar stated, “For a U.S. senator to have false information and imply… that you were somehow involved that day in what was happening in Georgia, and then call you a dirtbag is something that deserves an apology.”

Conclusion

The exchange highlights the complexities surrounding high-profile investigations and the potential for miscommunication in politically charged environments. As further details are awaited, the implications of this hearing will likely continue to reverberate through the political landscape.
