Details emerging from a civil lawsuit and related investigation have brought to light the harrowing account of a then-20-year-old Cornell student, referred to as Jane Doe, who alleges she was raped by multiple men at the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024. This documentation, obtained from various sources including CBS News, outlines key events from the night of the incident, subsequent interactions, and the responses from law enforcement and university officials.

Incident Overview

On October 19, 2024, Jane Doe reportedly attended a sorority gathering where she consumed a significant amount of vodka, leading to intoxication. According to her lawsuit, at around 8:30 p.m., she took an Uber to a bar with a sorority house mother, where she was allegedly served alcohol despite being underage. Following this, she moved to another bar with fellow sorority members before ultimately heading to the Chi Phi fraternity house shortly after 11 p.m. to meet a friend.

The Encounter at Chi Phi

Upon arrival, Jane Doe stated that she initially engaged in consensual sexual activity with two acquaintances; however, the circumstances rapidly deteriorated. By 1:42 a.m. on October 20, a fraternity member posted in a Snapchat group about a woman in the house, insinuating that she was available for sex. Jane Doe claims that she was pressured into taking ketamine, which incapacitated her, and that she was subsequently subjected to sexual assault by multiple men.

She vividly recounted her experience in a police interview, describing the escalating discomfort of the situation, stating, “I had become extremely uncomfortable with how this night was turning out.” Jane Doe ultimately lost consciousness by 5:45 a.m. that morning.

Reactions and Aftermath

Jane Doe eventually returned to her sorority house, where she initially shared her experience in a light-hearted manner with her roommates, showing signs of shock rather than outright distress. As days passed, she began to recognize the severity of the incident. She confided in her “big sister,” mentioning rumors about her situation and suggesting the reality of what transpired had yet to fully sink in.

On October 22, she visited Cornell Health for health concerns and mentioned the incident, describing her experience as “traumatic.” However, her report did not lead to immediate investigation steps, as she was primarily advised to seek counseling without being referred for a rape kit.

Documenting the Incident

In the days following, Jane Doe engaged in text conversations with some of the men involved, where they expressed concern over how the night had unfolded. She displayed confusion regarding her memories but emphasized that “90% of what happened that night was not consensual.” Her communication revealed shifting perceptions about her experience, transitioning from disbelief and minimization to acknowledgment of trauma.

Formal Reporting and Investigations

On November 7, Jane Doe finally sought a sexual assault forensic exam but found that the potential for DNA evidence had dissipated by that point. By November 8, encouraged by friends, she reported the incident to the campus police. Consequently, the Chi Phi fraternity was placed under suspension, and the university initiated disciplinary actions against the accused individuals.

Follow-Up Actions

Despite the university’s efforts, no criminal charges were initially filed. In the subsequent internal review, two fraternity members faced expulsion, while some received lesser sanctions. Jane Doe, after enduring immense emotional and psychological distress, ultimately decided to withdraw from her studies.

Recent Developments

On September 16, 2026, nearly two years after the alleged assault, Jane Doe filed a civil lawsuit against the fraternity members, the university, and other parties she holds accountable for her circumstances. Shortly thereafter, the local district attorney announced the reopening of a criminal investigation, emphasizing the importance of thoroughly investigating all evidence and statements related to the case.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced an independent investigation, appointing state Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor to oversee the case.

As this situation continues to unfold, it highlights critical issues concerning campus safety, sexual assault, and the responses of both educational institutions and law enforcement to such grave allegations.
