Custodial Worker Faces Multiple Charges of Voyeurism at Wilmington College

WILMINGTON, Ohio — A custodial employee at Wilmington College is facing serious legal consequences after being accused of secretly observing members of the women’s soccer team in their locker room. The incident, which has raised significant concerns about safety and privacy, has resulted in nearly a dozen charges of voyeurism against the individual.

Incident Overview

Authorities report that Wilmington police were dispatched to the Scheve Athletic Center on the campus around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday following a complaint of someone documenting the soccer team while they were in the process of changing. Upon arrival, officers found the suspect, identified as Jayson Barker from Jeffersonville, Ohio, being held by Wilmington College Campus Safety personnel.

Discovery and Arrest

Barker allegedly concealed himself in the ceiling of the women’s locker room, where he was discovered by a team member. Following this alarming revelation, Campus Safety and local police were promptly notified. “He climbed up and was able to push the ceiling tile,” stated Wilmington Detective Matt Hamilton.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Barker has been charged with 11 counts of voyeurism and is currently being held at the Clinton County Jail. His bail has been set at a cash surety bond of $22,000. Barker is expected to make his next court appearance on Monday, October 5, at the Clinton County Municipal Court. In addition to his current charges, police have obtained a search warrant for his cellphone and are exploring if this was an isolated incident or if further charges might be warranted.

Institutional Response and Safety Measures

In response to the violation of privacy concerns, Wilmington College has expressed its dedication to the safety and well-being of its students. “The College’s paramount concern is the safety and well-being of its students,” emphasized a statement from the institution. The college has since begun providing counseling and support services for the affected individuals and has initiated an evaluation of the facility’s security measures. Randal Sarvis, associate vice president for communications, confirmed that Barker is now subject to a no-trespass order that prohibits him from returning to college property.

Ongoing Investigation

The Wilmington Police Department has announced that their investigation remains active, aiming to determine the extent of Barker’s actions and whether additional charges may be necessary. The safety measures and policies in place at Wilmington College will likely undergo review in light of this incident to help prevent future occurrences.
