Jon Rahm Exits LIV Golf, Waives £75 Million Contract
Spaniard Jon Rahm has officially severed ties with LIV Golf, forfeiting a reported £75 million owed to him as part of a separation agreement.
Background on LIV Golf’s Bankruptcy
LIV Golf’s financial situation has worsened significantly following the withdrawal of backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, culminating in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in September.
Rahm’s Financial Stake in LIV
Initially, Jon Rahm was regarded as LIV Golf’s leading unsecured creditor, with estimates indicating that he was owed approximately $7.4 million (£5.5 million) for the remainder of the 2026 season alone. Reports from ESPN further revealed that within the context of his previous contract, Rahm had about $100 million (£75 million) at stake from his $300 million (£222 million) deal after leaving the PGA Tour in December 2023.
Separation Terms and Future Plans
Despite LIV Golf securing a potential $300 million financing from BC Partners Credit for its future projects, Rahm found the proposed terms unacceptable, leading him to voluntarily waive his complete financial claim. This decision allows him to make a “complete economic walk-away” from the league.
As part of this agreement, Rahm will retain the rights to ‘Legion XIII’, the name of the LIV team he captained, although he is restricted from utilizing this branding within TGL, the high-tech indoor league launched by golf icons Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
Current Standing and Career Moves
Rahm was one of the most prominent figures to join LIV Golf from the PGA Tour. While certain players, like Brooks Koepka, have returned to the PGA Tour despite its restrictions, and adapted rules that permit certain players to rejoin the fold, Rahm opted not to follow. Instead, he has proactively coordinated with the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) to maintain his membership, ensuring his eligibility for upcoming competitions, including next year’s Ryder Cup.
It’s noteworthy that players affiliated with LIV Golf face a one-year ban from the PGA Tour, highlighting the precarious nature of navigating between both leagues. Furthermore, Rahm has enjoyed notable success, securing his third consecutive LIV season title in August.
Looking Ahead
Jon Rahm has publicly declared that he holds no regrets about his prior decision to join LIV Golf, expressing confidence in the league’s potential for sustainable growth.
