Kimberly Guilfoyle Resigns as U.S. Ambassador to Greece Following Controversy
Washington — Kimberly Guilfoyle has announced her resignation as U.S. ambassador to Greece at the request of the White House, following reports of unsettling allegations regarding her conduct.
White House Press Briefing Highlights the Resignation
During her inaugural press briefing, White House press secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed the administration’s decision to ask Guilfoyle to step down. “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” Zacharia stated.
President Biden also addressed the situation, indicating his disapproval of recent reports concerning Guilfoyle. “I didn’t like what I read,” he remarked to reporters while en route to a campaign in Alaska.
Allegations Prompting the Resignation
The resignation unfolded just days after text messages were made public, suggesting Guilfoyle had solicited a $100,000 payment from an associate to settle her credit card debt before her Senate confirmation hearing last year. This revelation was initially reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Sources informed CBS News that Guilfoyle was hesitant about resigning but found herself left with no other option after the White House briefing.
Guilfoyle later confirmed her resignation via a post on X, expressing her unwavering commitment to former President Trump and the “America First” movement. “While my time as ambassador may be coming to an end, my commitment to President Trump, the America First movement, and the country I love will never end,” she wrote.
Furthermore, she denied the allegations against her and vowed to “rigorously defend” her reputation, thanking President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the opportunity to serve as ambassador.
A Shift in Alliances
Guilfoyle’s standing within the Trump administration appears to have diminished, with few allies remaining. Reports indicate that her former fiancé, Donald Trump Jr., has been polite but maintains limited contact with her.
On Monday, President Biden had alluded to the possibility of Guilfoyle’s removal, expressing that he was “not happy” with her conduct.
Background on the Allegations
Businessman Eric Deters claimed in interviews that Guilfoyle asked him to wire $100,000 to her American Express account during July 2025 to help mask her debt ahead of her confirmation hearing. He characterized her request as an inappropriate “pay to play” arrangement, noting that he did not have the funds at the time to comply with her request.
Deters’ assertion that the text messages exchanged between him and Guilfoyle were genuine has been supported by sources familiar with the matter.
Moreover, there are reports that Guilfoyle expressed frustration regarding being barred from certain high-profile events, such as a dinner for Eric Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Next Steps
As of now, there has been no announcement regarding a successor for the role of ambassador to Greece. The decision to remove Guilfoyle marks a significant shift within the administration amidst ongoing scrutiny and controversy.
