Bitcoin Surges Following Dismal U.S. Jobs Data
In early Monday trading, Bitcoin saw a modest increase of 1%, climbing slightly above the $86,000 mark. This rise can be attributed to a weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs report, which led many traders to revise their expectations regarding an interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve in October.
Market Movements of Cryptocurrencies
Among major cryptocurrencies, Dogecoin (DOGE) led the pack with a gain exceeding 3%. Additionally, HYPE experienced an uptick of nearly 3%, bringing its value to approximately $93. Ethereum (ETH) and XRP both registered gains of up to 1%. On the other hand, Solana (SOL), Binance Coin (BNB), and Zcash (ZEC) experienced slight declines of less than 1%, based on data from CoinDesk.
Analysis of U.S. Employment Data
The weak employment figures revealed that U.S. employers added merely 29,000 jobs in September, contrasting sharply with market expectations of 84,000 new jobs. The unemployment rate increased to 4.2%, while wage growth has slowed to 3% year-over-year, marking the slowest growth rate since May 2021. According to QCP Capital, this employment report supports the viewpoint that the Federal Reserve may pause any potential rate hikes during its upcoming meeting in October.
Impact on Long-term Borrowing Costs
Despite the employment data, long-term borrowing costs have remained relatively stable. As of now, the 10-year Treasury yield stands at 5.25%. QCP Capital attributes this stability to a significant supply of bonds and the higher returns that investors now seek for long-term debt holdings.
Liquidation Trends and Future Market Predictions
Over the weekend, liquidity in the cryptocurrency market remained light, with liquidations totaling $62.7 million. Notably, short positions comprised about 68% of the total. QCP Capital emphasized that “Acceptance above $87,200 remains necessary to confirm the next leg” of Bitcoin’s price movement.
Upcoming Federal Reserve Meeting
The minutes from the Federal Reserve’s last meeting are scheduled for release on Wednesday, which could provide further insight into the central bank’s monetary policy directions.
