Iran Proposes Bill for Strait of Hormuz Control

Iran’s parliament has initiated a significant legislative measure concerning the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global oil transportation.

Overview of the Proposed Legislation

The Iranian parliament has recently advanced a proposed bill aimed at solidifying the nation’s control over the Strait of Hormuz. This initiative, referred to as the “Strategic Action Plan for Ensuring Security and Sustainable Development of the Strait of Hormuz,” is set to impose fees on commercial vessels utilizing this crucial maritime corridor.

Key Provisions of the Bill

According to Hassan Ghashghavi, the spokesman for the National Security Commission of the parliament, the proposed legislation seeks to ensure that all traffic through the strait aligns with Iran’s national interests and security policies. Noteworthy provisions include:

  • Imposition of fees for services such as navigation, environmental protection, and fuel supply.
  • Prohibition of passage for vessels linked to Israel and countries considered hostile to Iran, including those having engaged in military actions against the nation.
  • Mandatory authorization from Iran’s General Staff of the Armed Forces for ships from nations not categorized as hostile prior to entering the strait.

Legislative Process and Context

The bill has passed initial committee assessments and awaits debate and voting by the full parliament. If successfully approved, it will proceed to review by the Guardian Council and other pertinent authorities before it can be enacted into law.

This legislative move comes in the context of heightened tensions in the region. The Trump administration has publicly disputed Iran’s assertions regarding their intended control over the strait and Iran’s requirements for vessels to seek permission for transit. Despite this, Iran has historically engaged in targeting ships it accuses of bypassing its authority in the strait, particularly affecting the flow of oil and gas from the Persian Gulf amidst ongoing regional conflicts.

For ongoing updates, stay informed about developments regarding this legislative initiative and its potential implications for global maritime activities.
