Michael Saylor on Bitcoin’s Bold Trajectory and Future Prospects
Michael Saylor, the executive chairman of Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), has expressed optimism regarding Bitcoin’s potential, suggesting that the cryptocurrency may enter a significant upward trend this year, potentially reaching the $100,000 mark within the next 12 months. However, he refrained from committing to achieving this target by the end of the calendar year.
Signs of a New Bull Market
In a recent discussion with Schwab Network, Saylor highlighted that Bitcoin has rebounded from its 200-week moving average, a key technical indicator often associated with the cessation of bear markets. Following this bounce, Bitcoin’s price surged by approximately $20,000.
“I can’t be sure it happens by the end of the year, but I feel like we’re definitely moving back into the six figures at this point,” said Saylor.
Factors Driving Bitcoin’s Potential Surge
Saylor identified a few critical factors that could catalyze Bitcoin’s rise, including:
- Digital credit expansion
- Bank lending against Bitcoin
- Tokenization of securities
He noted that Bitcoin miners introduce about $1 billion worth of new Bitcoin into the market each month. Interestingly, each $1 billion in digital credit issued could absorb this newly minted supply.
The Impact of Monetary Policy
Despite his bullish sentiment, Saylor cautioned that monetary policy poses significant risks, as Bitcoin tends to exhibit heightened volatility compared to other risk assets. He elaborated on this point during his interview:
“The final boss that generally drives all assets is monetary policy. Bitcoin tends to react like risk squared right now,” Saylor noted.
Insights on Regulatory Developments
Regarding legislative efforts, Saylor expressed a mixed view on the stalled Clarity Act, describing the lengthy bill as a “bill of restrictions.” He advocated for clearer guidance from regulatory bodies like the SEC, CFTC, and Treasury on matters concerning tokenization, derivatives, and digital currencies.
Strategy’s Bitcoin Holdings and Future Plans
Strategy currently holds around 845,000 Bitcoin, representing an estimated value of $70 billion to $72 billion, alongside $5 billion in cash reserves. Recently, the company acquired 334 additional Bitcoin in early October, spending $176.3 million to repurchase its preferred stock.
Saylor anticipates an annual growth rate of 20% to 30%, driven by the rising demand for digital credit, and is considering the introduction of daily dividends on preferred securities, pending shareholder approval. He also pointed out that as AI-driven wealth increases, it will likely seek out scarce assets, emphasizing that “robots can’t make more Bitcoin.”
Looking Ahead
A shareholder vote on the proposal for daily dividends is scheduled for later this month, while Strategy’s third-quarter financial results are expected on October 29.
