An Overhauled Windows Search Experience for Windows 11
Microsoft is in the process of significantly enhancing the Windows Search functionality in Windows 11, aiming to resolve long-standing frustrations among users.
Speed and Modernization
According to Anshul Rawat, corporate vice president of the Windows product team, the newly redesigned Windows Search is “built for speed.” Leveraging WinUI 3, this update is part of Microsoft’s broader initiative to modernize foundational Windows features, promising a smoother user experience.
Performance Improvements
Initial testing of the new Windows Search interface indicates significant advancements in performance and memory efficiency. Microsoft emphasizes that these enhancements will not contribute to any additional bloat in system resources.
Furthermore, the user interface has seen considerable improvements, featuring fast animations and an expansive preview pane that enhances usability.
Enhanced Search Capabilities
Behind the user-facing changes, Microsoft is improving the core functionalities of Windows Search. Rawat highlighted that the search engine will better understand user queries by improving its capabilities for typo matching and synonym recognition.
User Experience Overview
At a recent Windows and Surface event, attendees had the opportunity to interact with the new Windows Search interface. Feedback has been positive, with users appreciating the quick response times and a more streamlined design.
For instance, searching for details such as an actor’s height now provides results almost instantly, similar to modern search experiences found in mobile operating systems like iOS and Android. The inline results also include previews of files such as PowerPoint presentations and photos.
Advanced Functionality
One of the most exciting features is the search’s ability to function similarly to a launcher, facilitating direct actions on the operating system. Users can quickly toggle settings like Bluetooth and dark mode, minimize windows, or launch applications side-by-side with simple queries. Additionally, integration with Phone Link allows users to send text messages directly from the search bar.
Future Developments
Currently undergoing testing with Windows Insiders, the revamped Windows Search is anticipated to roll out to users in upcoming updates. Rawat shared insights into future enhancements, stating, “Looking to next year, work is already underway to bring the new Windows Search experience to the Start menu.” This adaptation aims to make search more intuitive and contextually relevant, enhancing productivity for Windows users.
