U.S. Government Controls Starlink Restrictions, Elon Musk Confirms
In a recent announcement, Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of SpaceX, clarified the oversight of the Starlink network in Ukraine, attributing any restrictions to the U.S. government and President Donald Trump. Musk stated that “Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the U.S. government. Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS.”
Ukrainian Military’s Concerns
The Ukrainian defense forces have expressed their concerns over newly implemented changes to the Starlink internet service that reportedly hinder military operations. Specifically, Ukrainian officials allege that SpaceX imposed speed limits on Starlink terminals, particularly those in motion, without prior notification.
Serhii Beskrestnov, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, revealed that these restrictions have affected critical military missions, especially in light of recent Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. He noted that the same limitations are also applied to the military-grade Starshield network, which is intended for defense applications.
Significance of Starlink in Military Operations
Starlink plays a vital role in the operation of Ukraine’s interceptor drones, which have proven effective against threats such as Moscow’s Shahed drones. According to Beskrestnov, these systems represent Ukraine’s most reliable defense against aerial assaults.
Recent Developments and Reactions
Following mounting pressure, some restrictions appear to have been eased. Mykhailo Fedorov, a former Ukrainian defense minister, expressed gratitude towards Musk, noting that Starlink services have been restored to speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. However, Fedorov stressed the critical need for the complete removal of speed limits on Starshield for Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Tensions Between Ukraine and the U.S.
This situation unfolds amid growing tensions between Ukraine and the United States, particularly regarding an “energy ceasefire” between Ukraine and Russia—a proposal put forth by President Trump. Ukraine remains hopeful about the agreement but has emphasized that any deal depends on Russia honoring its commitments. Despite these discussions, President Zelenskyy accused Russia of violating the ceasefire, complicating diplomatic efforts.
Moreover, Trump criticized Ukraine’s military actions against Russian energy facilities, suggesting that such operations have contributed to rising diesel prices rather than linking them to U.S. military activities in Iran. Reports from Reuters indicate heightened U.S. officials’ warnings about potential reductions in intelligence support for Ukraine, following recent developments, which have led to a lack of alerts regarding impending Russian attacks.
