Flash Flood Warnings Issued for Regions in Nebraska and Iowa

The National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley has issued multiple flash flood warnings across certain counties in Nebraska and southwestern Iowa due to severe thunderstorms leading to significant rainfall. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions as life-threatening flooding has already been reported.

Current Warnings and Conditions

Nebraska Flash Flood Warnings

The flash flood warning affecting Douglas and Sarpy counties is in effect until 3:00 AM CDT. At 11:46 PM CDT, local law enforcement reported ongoing water rescues in the vicinity of 168th and Harrison, with reported rainfall between 5 and 8 inches. The current rainfall rate is expected to reach between 1 and 2 inches per hour, with an additional inch possible.

  • Locations Impacted:
    • Omaha
    • Bellevue
    • Papillion
    • Gretna
    • Other areas: Millard, Elkhorn, Offutt AFB, and more.
  • Highways Affected: Interstate 80 between mile markers 430 and 454.

Iowa Flash Flood Warnings

In Iowa, a flash flood warning for Southern Harrison County, Northwestern Pottawattamie County, and parts of Nebraska is set to continue until 2:15 AM CDT. Doppler radar has shown heavy rain, accumulating between 2 and 4 inches, and expecting rates of 1.5 to 3 inches during the next hour.

  • Locations Likely to See Flash Flooding:
    • Blair
    • Fort Calhoun
    • Logan
    • Missouri Valley, and more.
  • Highways Affected: Interstate 29 between mile markers 66 and 82; Interstate 80 in Iowa between mile markers 20 and 40.

Safety Precautions

Authorities emphasize the importance of being cautious during these severe weather events:

  • Turn around, don’t drown. Most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles attempting to navigate flooded roads.
  • Exercise extreme caution at night, as visibility is poorer and hazards may be harder to identify.
  • Stay informed of weather conditions and be prepared to take immediate action if flooding occurs.

Flood Watch Advisory

A flood watch continues through Thursday evening, indicating the potential for excessive rainfall across numerous counties in both Nebraska and Iowa. Potential impacts include flooding of rivers, creeks, and poorly drained areas as soil saturation increases.

  • Potential Rainfall: Localized amounts may reach up to 6 inches in some areas.

Stay up to date with the latest forecasts and alerts from the National Weather Service to ensure safety during this period of heavy rainfall.
