Blast Shuts Down: Ethereum Layer-2 Network Faces Economic Challenges

Overview of Blast’s Shutdown

Blast, a layer-2 network on Ethereum, has announced its closure, citing that operational costs now overshadow its earnings and that there is no feasible route toward economic sustainability. Users are encouraged to withdraw their funds by October 26. After this date, assets will only be accessible via Blast’s bridge contracts on the Ethereum network.

Withdrawal Details

Users are currently advised to transfer their assets back to Ethereum’s mainnet. The Blast team noted that the withdrawal delay will be shortened to 24 hours, but a brief pause will occur as they retrieve network assets from Lido, a liquid staking protocol. Fund withdrawals through the Blast interface will cease post-October 26, though alternative withdrawal methods will be provided through published instructions prior to that deadline.

Blast’s Journey and Challenges

Launched in November 2023 by the creators of the NFT marketplace Blur, Blast initially promised substantial built-in yields on ETH and stablecoin holdings. Backed by Paradigm in a $20 million seed round, Blast attracted over $1.1 billion in deposits before its launch, which saw over $2.3 billion locked in its bridge by early February 2024.

However, difficulties arose shortly after the mainnet launch. Following Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade in March 2024, Blast faced issues with block production. A subsequent airdrop in June 2024, which allocated over $354 million worth of BLAST tokens, left many users dissatisfied, and by that time, total value locked had already diminished by approximately 30% from its peak.

Wider Industry Trends

Blast is not alone in its struggle; several layer-2 networks have recently shuttered operations. In May, Zerion announced the shutdown of its Zero Network after approximately 18 months, giving users until July 31 to bridge their assets. Additionally, the Silicon Network, associated with the South Korean exchange Korbit, halted deposits on September 2 and is allowing withdrawals until December 31, with an estimated $9.75 million still on the network.

The broader cryptocurrency landscape is witnessing a contraction, with platforms such as CoinEx, BitMEX, and BitMart also indicating plans to close down within the year.

Conclusion

The closure of Blast highlights the challenges layer-2 networks face in achieving financial viability amidst a rapidly evolving cryptocurrency market. As users navigate the upcoming withdrawal period, the fate of similar projects raises concerns about sustainability in the sector.
