Market Reactions: Fed Rate Hike Signals and OpenAI Revenue Adjustments
Stock Market Performance Overview
On Thursday, stock markets demonstrated mixed results, primarily driven by developments in the artificial intelligence sector. Notably, shares related to AI experienced declines following a report indicating that OpenAI’s annualized revenue was significantly less than anticipated.
While the Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded a slight gain of 0.10%, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite indices fell by 0.47% and 1.25%, respectively.
OpenAI’s Revenue Update
According to a recent report, OpenAI’s annualized revenue reached $50 billion by the end of September. This figure is notably lower than the previously reported $68 billion from last month, informing market expectations and influencing investor sentiment.
Federal Reserve’s Stance on Interest Rates
Stocks faced further pressure on Thursday after comments from Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller, who advocated for additional interest rate hikes to combat ongoing inflation.
During a speech at a Central Bank of Turkey forum in Istanbul, Waller suggested that while rate decisions might not need to occur at consecutive meetings following the September increase, they should happen in a timely manner.
The Federal Reserve’s recent meeting minutes revealed that many officials favor another interest rate increase before the year concludes. The minutes state, “Most participants assessed that another increase in the target range for the federal funds rate would likely be appropriate by year-end.”
Though the minutes hinted at a forthcoming increase, they did not specify a timeline, emphasizing that future decisions will depend on upcoming economic data and its implications.
As of Thursday, market expectations for an October rate hike remained high, with probability estimates exceeding 78%, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool.
Impact of Geopolitical Events on Oil Prices
In addition to market volatility driven by tech stock performance, oil prices also saw a rise after reports surfaced regarding potential military action by the Trump administration against Iran. Sources disclosed that discussions had occurred within President Trump’s national security team regarding the resumption of strikes against Iran, possibly occurring ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
According to NBC News, the Pentagon has instructed U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) to finalize preparations should the campaign against Tehran recommence. This possible military action could involve extensive bombings targeting Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities.
Responding to these reports, President Trump stated via social media that the U.S. “will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections,” while also claiming that discussions with Iran were ongoing and “productive.”
