For nearly three decades, the Chippewa Valley Book Festival has been a hallmark of literary celebration, profoundly influencing the local community’s perspective on reading. The festival’s ongoing mission is to foster a lasting love for books and creative writing while building invaluable connections within the region.

Inaugurated in 1999 by the Eau Claire Regional Arts Council’s Literary Arts Committee, the festival has significantly evolved, now collaborating with the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library. The annual event presents a rich tapestry of literary activities, ranging from hands-on youth engagements to exclusive dinners with authors at local restaurants.

As attendees gather each autumn, many may ponder the dedicated individuals crafting this literary experience behind the scenes. A dynamic group of women—Sara Meeks, Isa Small, Margaret Leonard, Judy Dekan, and Susan Carroll—have committed their efforts to orchestrate this beloved festival.

In anticipation of the 2026 Chippewa Valley Book Festival, scheduled for October 19 to 24, we explored the motivations of these organizers and highlighted key events that are not to be missed. Detailed schedules, featuring authors, activities, and registration links, can be accessed at cvbookfest.org or at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library located at 400 Eau Claire St., Eau Claire.

Dedicated organizers Sara Meeks, Isa Small, Margaret Leonard, Judy Dekan, and Susan Carroll contribute their passion and expertise to the Chippewa Valley Book Festival. The festival will take place from October 19 to 24 this year, showcasing various literary events.

Sara Meeks

Marketing Chair

Having joined the festival as marketing chair in 2018, Sara Meeks initially agreed to assist with the redesign of the logo and website. Now, years later, she remains committed to enhancing visibility for this inspiring organization.

“I love to read, but as life took over, I found myself reading less. Getting involved with the book festival rekindled my love for literature and storytelling. It offers a community impact that continues to draw me in,” Meeks shared.

In terms of personal reading preferences, Meeks enjoys a variety without settling on one genre, indicating a fondness for both fiction and nonfiction alike. She is particularly looking forward to speaker Jerry Poling’s event related to the Birkebeiner cross-country ski race, which resonates with her childhood experiences at the Telemark Resort.

Isa Small

Committee Co-Chair (Authors and Events)

A lifelong resident of Eau Claire, Isa Small has spent nearly 20 years at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library. Her literary passion is reflected in her work with the festival over the past 12 years.

“Reading allows us to experience the world from various perspectives, offering depth to our understanding of diverse issues,” Small remarked. Beyond her literary focus, she humorously admits to having a flair for lively conversation and spirited debates over grammar.

What excites Small most about the festival is not just the events but the communal spirit that thrives between them, uniting readers and authors in shared conversations.

Margaret Leonard

Committee Co-Chair (Fiction and Nonfiction)

With a Master’s degree in English literature and ownership of Dotters Books, Margaret Leonard brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the festival, having volunteered since 2020.

Leonard finds joy in reading as it expands her empathy and understanding. “I believe in nurturing community through books, and the festival embodies that,” she explained, adding that her book sales efforts remain a central part of her festival involvement. Looking forward, she is especially eager to host author Rebecca Kauffman, whose writing captivates her for its ability to blend the ordinary with the extraordinary.

Judy Dekan

Co-Chair

Judy Dekan’s deep passion for literature has shaped her long-term participation in the Chippewa Valley Book Festival. As a former middle school teacher, Dekan has always valued reading and its role in education.

“The festival opens up opportunities for attendees to connect with authors, often inspiring them to read their works. Many visitors travel great distances to see their favorite authors,” said Dekan, highlighting the festival’s significant community impact.

Susan Carroll

Sponsor, Committee Member, and Volunteer

For Susan Carroll, the festival’s goal of engaging the public through free events is paramount. “We strive to make literature accessible for everyone,” she noted.

Carroll is particularly excited about an event featuring various authors discussing ‘Writing in Your Own Backyard’ at 6 p.m. on October 21. This reflects her view of the festival as a consistent platform for local, regional, and national authors, enriching community engagement through literature

“The festival not only highlights writers but also supports programs that bring authors into schools, allowing students to interact with the creators of the books they cherish,” Carroll added.

The insights provided by these dedicated organizers paint a vibrant picture of what to expect at the upcoming Chippewa Valley Book Festival, where literature and community seamlessly intertwine.
