Pope Leo XIV Returns to Public Eye Following Lung Cancer Surgery

Location: Rome

First Public Appearance

Pope Leo XIV made his first significant public appearance since undergoing surgery for lung cancer. Addressing the crowd from the balcony of the Apostolic Palace, he expressed that his experience has deepened his empathy for those enduring similar health challenges.

A Warm Reception

The 71-year-old pontiff led the Angelus prayers on Sunday, with thousands of supporters gathering in St. Peter’s Square to welcome him back. The crowd erupted in applause and song as the Pope delivered his address, signalling relief and joy at his return.

Gratitude and Reflections

In his remarks, Pope Leo XIV expressed gratitude to his medical team and those who prayed for his recovery. He stated, “This experience has given me a profound sense of closeness to all those who are going through illness or a state of infirmity.” He reassured his audience of his gradual return to his papal duties.

As he concluded, he said, “Now that this delicate phase has passed, I will gradually resume my activities – always with the help of God and your prayers.”

Health Update

Following his surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his lung, diagnosed as adenocarcinoma, Pope Leo XIV was discharged from the Gemelli Hospital on Saturday. His doctors reported a positive recovery trajectory, suggesting he is well enough to carry out his scheduled trip to Latin America, set for November 6-17.

Professor Stefano Margaritora, who oversaw the operation, indicated that there are no clinical concerns preventing the visit.

Community Engagement

The Pope’s remarks coincided with the crowd of runners participating in the Rome marathon, which took place in proximity to St. Peter’s Square. His message of resilience on this day resonated deeply with the participants and observers alike.

Future Travel Plans

Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming trip to Latin America includes stops in Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, where he previously served as a missionary. Notably, his itinerary includes a visit to Cusco, a city located at high altitude, which may present breathing challenges given the reduced oxygen levels.
