Jagex Cancels RuneScape Reignited Following Player Feedback
October 15, 2023
Cancellation Announcement
Mod Ryan, the creative director at Jagex, announced the abrupt cancellation of the newly proposed game mode, RuneScape Reignited, less than two weeks after its unveiling. This decision was primarily influenced by feedback from the player community, emphasizing Jagex’s commitment to player input.
In an official communication through a YouTube video and blog post, Ryan stated, “We received a ton of different perspectives from all of you, and we truly appreciate everyone sharing their views. It is super important to us because the last time we didn’t listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that… Considering this, we have made the decision to cancel Reignited.”
Community Response and Future Plans
In reflecting on the feedback received, Ryan noted that the proposed mode did not align with the community’s expectations. He stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the existing player base as well as welcoming new participants into the game. “It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it,” he concluded.
Despite the cancellation of Reignited, exciting developments are on the horizon for both new and returning players. Starting December 2, 2023, RuneScape will host a 10-day free trial period that grants access to Member worlds and content for new characters or existing characters that have not been members since June 2, 2023. This trial is available until December 12, 2023.
Updates and Enhancements
The team at Jagex is actively working on several updates, including the release of the Adventure Guide and the first segment of the Remastered Journey. Ryan also mentioned the ongoing roadmap for 2027, which remains robust with scheduled improvements and features. Upcoming initiatives include:
- Combat and skilling content updates.
- A conclusion to decade-old storylines culminating in a grandmaster quest.
- A comprehensive rework of the Agility skill, crucial to player experience.
Ryan reassured players that “the future of RuneScape is still extremely bright” and reaffirmed the company’s dedication to ongoing community engagement.
Background on RuneScape Reignited
Initially revealed during RuneFest 2026 on October 3, RuneScape Reignited aimed to provide a fresh start reminiscent of the experience when the game first launched. However, player concerns regarding community fragmentation led to calls for Jagex to focus on existing content rather than creating parallel versions. Community sentiment appears largely positive following the cancellation, with many players expressing relief and support for maintaining the integrity of the game.
“I’m glad to see Reignited is canceled, that does go a long way to rebuilding trust,” shared one player in response to the news.
Another player noted, “We want new people, but we want them to join this game, not a parallel copy of this game.”
Looking Ahead to RuneScape 4
Additionally, RuneScape 4 was introduced at RuneFest, promising to be a next-generation iteration of the beloved MMO, built on the Unreal Engine. While details remain limited, the excitement for this upcoming version adds to the hopeful outlook for RuneScape’s future.
