Exploring the Cultural Significance of Coffee in Colombia

Coffee in Colombia transcends being simply a morning beverage; it embodies a vital aspect of daily life and fosters connections among families and communities. This notion is passionately conveyed by Antonia Sandoval, brand manager for ¡Dios Mío! Coffee, especially during Hispanic Heritage Month.

The Vision Behind ¡Dios Mío! Coffee

For Sandoval, coffee serves as a medium for integration. “Everything happens around coffee in Latin countries, but I believe that also worldwide. But especially here in Colombia,” she shared. The brand was established as a tribute to Latina women, co-founded by Colombian actress Sofía Vergara, who has a deep-rooted connection to her homeland.

Born in Barranquilla, Vergara migrated to the United States, where she frequently experienced Colombian coffee but longed for the high-quality Arabica coffee of her youth. Sandoval noted, “She really wanted to bring that experience of a really good quality Colombian Arabica coffee to the U.S.” The goal, as Vergara described it, is to “democratize great coffee in the U.S.” by sharing Colombia’s rich coffee heritage and agricultural tradition.

Empowering Women in the Coffee Industry

Sandoval emphasized that historically, the Colombian coffee sector has been male-dominated. Vergara’s vision for ¡Dios Mío! Coffee was to position women at the forefront of the business. “She was like, I am not just launching a brand because I’m launching a brand,” Sandoval explained. “If I am doing a new business, I really want to support the women that are behind it.”

The company exclusively collaborates with women coffee growers, supporting more than 500 women in less than two years through premium pricing and a gender equity initiative in partnership with Colombia’s National Coffee Federation. This initiative encompasses not only the price premium but also includes health services and financial education workshops aimed at empowering women in rural regions.

“For me, that’s very special because it’s not just like we’re just paying extra money, but we’re actually giving tools to help them know how to use it in a very smart way,” Sandoval stated. Personal connections with the growers greatly enhance the brand’s mission, allowing Sandoval to share their stories and struggles. One such grower, Delia from Boyacá, has dedicated over 50 years to the coffee industry and believes cultivating flowers alongside coffee brings vibrancy to her farm environment.

Attracting Future Generations to Coffee Farming

Sandoval pointed to a pressing issue in Colombia’s coffee industry: the challenge of attracting young talent to agriculture. As many growers age, there is a risk of losing generational knowledge. Sandoval notes the importance of showing younger generations the potential and positives of coffee farming, which are essential for both preserving family legacies and ensuring the sustainability of Colombia’s economy.

“That is very beautiful when someone like Marta, for instance, really gathers her family and manages to make this a family business,” Sandoval said, highlighting the significance of fostering family-run coffee enterprises.

A Philosophy of Passion and Hard Work

The women farmers cultivate coffee with a devotion that speaks volumes about their relationship with the crop. According to Sandoval, “I’d say passion, perseverance, and hard work” characterize the values these growers embody. Their daily routines commence early, around 5 a.m., as they tend to their fields with meticulous care. “They have this special relationship with the coffee beans,” Sandoval added, reflecting the profound bond between the growers and their products.

The Unique Qualities of Colombian Coffee

Colombian coffee stands out for its use of pure Arabica beans, nurtured by the country’s favorable climate, volcanic soil, and high altitudes. Sandoval emphasized the meticulous nature of the harvesting process, primarily done by hand, ensuring excellent quality control throughout. Yet, her aspirations for consumers extend beyond taste.

Fostering Cultural Connections Through Coffee

Sandoval believes that coffee serves as a vehicle for deeper engagement with Colombia’s culture, often overshadowed by stereotypes. “I feel like coffee is such a beautiful way to put all of that apart, all of that aside and have a conversation about the history of our country,” she expressed.

She hopes that coffee can reflect the warmth and vibrancy of Colombian and Hispanic culture, encouraging shared experiences of laughter, storytelling, and connection. “Coffee is always a part of those moments,” Sandoval reiterated.

The Brand’s Meaningful Name

Reflecting this sentiment is the brand’s name, ¡Dios Mío!, which translates to “my God,” a phrase commonly used in Spanish to express surprise or delight. Sandoval illustrated that such a reaction might accompany the experience of tasting something exceptionally delightful, aligning perfectly with the brand’s mission.

Bringing People Together Through Coffee

Ultimately, Sandoval views coffee as a unifier, offering insight into the Colombian heritage from which it originates. When asked to complete the statement, “For me, coffee is more than a drink because …” she replied, “Because it’s gathering, it’s life, it’s sharing moments with the people that you love and it’s enjoying a beautiful cup of coffee that shows really what Colombia is made of.”

Where to Purchase ¡Dios Mío! Coffee

You can find ¡Dios Mío! Coffee across the nation at Walmart stores and on Walmart.com, as well as on Amazon. The brand offers a variety of roasts, including light, medium, and dark options, and provides coffee in ground, whole bean, and Nespresso-compatible capsules and K-Cups.
