Standard Chartered Launches Direct Cryptocurrency Trading for Affluent Clients in UAE
Standard Chartered has announced the launch of direct trading services for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) tailored for its affluent clients in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This significant development comes after the bank received licensing approval from the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA).
Overview of the New Service
The newly introduced service allows eligible Professional Investor clients to execute trades in BTC and ETH directly from their existing bank accounts. This innovation eliminates the reliance on third-party wallets or exchanges, streamlining the process for clients interested in digital assets.
According to Standard Chartered, this venture signifies a global first for the bank and positions it as a pioneer in the realm of cryptocurrency offerings among international banks in the UAE.
Operational Framework
Executed within the bank’s ecosystem, trades will be processed through a closed-loop model, ensuring that Standard Chartered manages custody and settlement fully. This approach minimizes clients’ exposure to the risks associated with external wallets, enhancing security during transactions.
The service was developed in collaboration with Zodia Markets, a digital asset trading firm associated with the bank’s venture division, SC Ventures. This collaboration signifies the bank’s commitment to integrating digital assets into its core wealth management offerings.
Strategic Significance
Samir Subberwal, Standard Chartered’s global head of wealth solutions, emphasized that as client interest in digital assets escalates, this service represents a crucial milestone. He remarked, “Clients now want more than access; they are looking for the security that comes with buying through a regulated institution.”
With Dubai as a hub known for its supportive regulatory framework for virtual assets, Rola Abu Manneh, the bank’s CEO for the UAE, Middle East, and Pakistan, indicated that the UAE was a logical choice for launching this service.
Background and Market Context
This innovative service marks a shift from the bank’s previous focus on institutional clients, where it had offered cryptocurrency trading exclusively through its UK branch. Standard Chartered began its crypto trading operations targeting institutional clients back in July 2025 and has gradually expanded its presence in the UAE.
Prior to this launch, the bank had provided clients with indirect opportunities to engage with cryptocurrency, such as through crypto exchange-traded funds and over-the-counter derivatives. The new service now allows clients to own and manage the actual coins, enhancing control and ownership over their digital assets.
As Standard Chartered continues to endorse the potential of digital currencies, analysts from the bank have consistently voiced optimistic projections for the future of Bitcoin, maintaining a year-end target of $100,000 per BTC, despite recent market fluctuations.
Conclusion
The introduction of direct trading for Bitcoin and Ethereum by Standard Chartered marks a notable evolution in the banking landscape for digital assets in the UAE. As the demand for cryptocurrency solutions grows among affluent investors, this service not only enhances the bank’s offerings but also reinforces its position as a key player in the financial services sector in the region.
