Exploring the Expanding Tokenized Equities Market
The tokenized equities market is experiencing remarkable growth, reporting an extraordinary increase in total market value of 790% year-over-year as of October 12, based on findings from Grayscale.
Understanding Tokenized Stocks
Tokenized stocks are blockchain-based tokens that represent shares of real companies. As of October 20, the tradeable segment of tokenized stocks achieved a combined value of $3.4 billion. This marks a 13% rise over the previous month and encompasses a total of 4.5 million holders. For context, this segment was valued at merely $686.8 million at the start of the year, and only $288.2 million at the beginning of 2025.
Leading Blockchains in Tokenized Equities
In the race to dominate the tokenized equities market, various blockchains have emerged:
- BNB Chain: Leading with $1.5 billion in tokenized equities.
- Ethereum: Following closely with $732.8 million.
- Solana: Holding $485.2 million worth of tokenized assets.
Solana stands out due to its efficiency, being the fastest and generally the most cost-effective major network. It accounted for between 95% and 97% of all tokenized stock activity on decentralized exchanges during the second quarter of this year. Recently, Robinhood Chain has shown competition, temporarily overtaking Solana’s lead.
The Disconnect Between Activity and Value
It’s crucial to understand that increased blockchain activity does not inherently benefit holders of the underlying cryptocurrencies. For many blockchains, including Solana, the method of handling transaction fees can influence how much value is captured. Solana, for instance, utilizes its transaction fees to burn coins, which decreases the overall supply. However, due to the relatively low fees, this burning mechanism does not significantly impact the circulation of coins, limiting potential upside for current holders.
Future Potential of the Tokenized Equities Market
Predictions about the future value of the tokenized equities market are optimistic. Citigroup projects that tokenized public equities could reach approximately $2.6 trillion by 2030. Similarly, Morgan Stanley forecasts the tokenized real-world assets market—including bonds and real estate—could grow between $3 trillion and $10 trillion by the same year.
The Role of Regulation in Market Dynamics
Regulatory factors will likely shape the competitive landscape. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently granted a five-year exemption allowing qualifying venues to offer tokenized stocks on blockchains without needing to register as exchanges. This exemption is contingent on the tokenized assets maintaining rights comparable to traditional shares, thus invalidating many existing offerings.
Under these new regulations, Coinbase Global may benefit, as its tokens are secured by shares held in custody. However, Coinbase currently only has $8.1 million in tokenized assets, which means it lags compared to its competitor, Robinhood, which has a broader selection of 189 tokens valued collectively at $143.6 million. It’s important to note, however, that Robinhood’s offerings are classified as debt securities without voting rights and may require restructuring for its U.S. platform.
Investors’ Considerations
For now, stocks of companies involved in the tokenization of equities, such as Robinhood and Coinbase, may offer a more profitable avenue than cryptocurrencies due to their ability to generate revenue and distribute earnings to shareholders. However, as this market continues evolving, significant growth opportunities remain on the horizon.
