Apple’s Foldable iPhone Duo: Testing Durability and Market Impact

On Friday, Apple unveiled its highly anticipated foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, which quickly drew crowds and sold out in many locations. In Louisville, Kentucky, we dedicated three hours to acquire a unit for our testing laboratory, where I manage hardware and software evaluations.

Initial Testing Results

As of Saturday afternoon, our testing machine has successfully completed over 20,000 folds of the iPhone Duo. Our primary objective is to assess the durability of both the innovative hinge mechanism and the device’s screens.

The Testing Framework

To rigorously evaluate the iPhone Duo, we utilized a custom-built testing apparatus known as the Fold-a-Phone. This machine is engineered to simulate real-world usage scenarios while avoiding excess strain on the device. It effectively opens and closes the phone, allowing us to observe how the hinge and display react over time.

The approach aims to replicate user behavior, as no one would continuously fold their phone rapidly. Instead, we allow natural breaks between operations, mirroring usage patterns in daily life.

Technical Specifications of the Fold-a-Phone

Our Fold-a-Phone operates on a cycle of approximately 4 seconds per complete fold, encompassing the opening and closing phases. Designed with two armatures, driven by industrial-grade stepper motors, the machine adjusts its movements based on a combination of torque settings and proximity sensors to protect the device during testing.

Additionally, we monitor power consumption and capture video footage to analyze the folding process from multiple angles, ensuring comprehensive data collection.

The Competitive Landscape

The introduction of the iPhone Duo marks Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market, a space that has been dominated by competitors like Samsung since the launch of its Galaxy Fold in September 2019. This move potentially reshapes consumer perceptions and expectations regarding foldable devices.

Senior Technology Reporter Abrar Al-Heeti provided a thorough analysis of the iPhone Duo’s strengths and weaknesses in her review. The data gathered from our Fold-a-Phone will complement her insights, adding a layer of technical rigor to understanding Apple’s novel device.

Future Testing and Insights

As Apple has not disclosed the expected lifespan of the iPhone Duo’s folding mechanism, our evaluations are set to generate crucial data for both consumers and industry analysts. This enhanced understanding will be instrumental in gauging the durability and preparedness of foldable smartphones to meet consumer demands.

Join CNET’s iPhone Duo livestream on YouTube on Monday from 1-5 p.m. ET, where you can follow along live and ask questions about our iPhone Duo testing process.

Conclusion

The iPhone Duo’s release may signify a pivotal moment in the evolution of foldable smartphones, compelling innovation across the industry. The ongoing testing with our Fold-a-Phone will provide valuable insights into both the capabilities and potential limitations of devices in this emerging category, ensuring that we keep our audience informed and engaged.
