Innovative Insurance Solutions
Meanwhile is distinguished as the first life insurer globally licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin. It holds all policy reserves and financials in Bitcoin, reflecting a commitment to the cryptocurrency space. After two years in a regulatory sandbox, they received a pioneering license from the Bermuda Monetary Authority in July 2024.
In early 2026, the company rolled out its BTC Life 1-Pay single-premium life insurance policy, enabling clients to make a one-time Bitcoin payment in exchange for a guaranteed death benefit, also in Bitcoin. This policy’s unique feature allows policyholders to borrow against their insurance after the first year, up to 90% of the policy’s cash value, without a repayment timeline or margin calls.
Market Demand and Future Outlook
The funding announcement coincides with a record year for Meanwhile, as interest in their insurance offerings continues to rise. The firm has already signed agreements with 15 brokers across major international hubs such as Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Notably, Meanwhile’s long-term underwriting income has exceeded that of the previous year.
“Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin. What they haven’t had is a regulated way to pass it on,” stated Zac Townsend, Meanwhile’s co-founder and CEO. This sentiment underscores the growing need for regulated financial products that cater to the modern asset landscape, particularly as insurers explore ways to integrate Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies into long-term financial planning tools.
Industry Trends
Meanwhile’s innovative approach reflects a broader trend in the financial services industry where companies are increasingly incorporating Bitcoin into traditional financial products. For example, Delaware Life’s recent collaboration with BlackRock to offer Bitcoin exposure through fixed indexed annuities illustrates the expanding acceptance of digital assets within conventional investment vehicles.
With its progressive business model and strategic funding, Meanwhile is poised to become a leader in the niche market of cryptocurrency-based life insurance, catering to an emerging clientele that values both wealth management and technological innovation.
