The Siege of Survival: Three Years After the Siegel’s Ordeal
Resilience Amidst Trauma
It has been three years since Chapel Hill residents Keith and Aviva Siegel were kidnapped by Hamas militants. Their ordeal, which included the tragic deaths of 1,200 individuals, has left lingering emotions of sadness, sorrow, and gratitude for their survival.
Reflections on Survival
Aviva, reflecting on their experiences, shared with WRAL News that the emotional toll of such traumatic events is often felt long before the actual anniversary. “I always feel that when there’s something really bad that you have to prepare yourself for it, you take your time,” she explained.
After her release over a month following her abduction, Aviva is only now beginning to feel a sense of freedom. “I’ve just started to feel free lately,” she remarked, acknowledging the ongoing trauma that she and others carry.
Torture and Release
Keith endured a brutal 484 days of captivity characterized by physical and psychological torture. He was finally released on February 1, 2025, as part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. In a recent interview, Keith expressed profound gratitude for his reunion with family while also mourning the loss of others who suffered similarly. “I have been thinking a lot about how grateful I am to be alive… but I also feel so so sorry and sad for all of the people that didn’t survive,” he stated.
During their captivity, Aviva documented their harrowing experiences, leading her to write a book titled Survived to Tell, which aims to share the truth of their ordeal.
Hope for Future Generations
Aviva emphasized the importance of sharing their story, stating, “It’s really a victory that Keith is here, and that I’m here, and that we could share the truth.” She hopes that their experiences will empower others to advocate for a better future, ensuring that such violence is not repeated for new generations.
Peace Amidst Ongoing Conflict
Despite the continuing unrest in the Middle East, the Siegels hold on to hope for peace. “Just hoping and praying for peace…so people will be able to live in peace and in security,” Keith noted, highlighting the responsibility of global leaders to prioritize stability and peace.
Community Support and Moving Forward
As they navigate their healing journey, both Keith and Aviva express gratitude for the support they have received from the Triangle community. Keith reflected on the kindness of strangers who rallied for their release, saying, “It’s very very moving…it brings me a lot of optimism.” They believe that with the help of caring individuals, a brighter future is possible.
