Trump Establishes AI Task Force Led by Jay Clayton
On Sunday, President Donald Trump announced the creation of a new task force focused on the management and oversight of artificial intelligence. The initiative is led by Jay Clayton, the Director of National Intelligence.
Task Force Membership and Structure
The task force includes notable figures such as:
- Andrew Ferguson, Chair of the Federal Trade Commission
- Emil Michael, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering
According to Trump, the group will report directly to him, as well as to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
Background on the Initiative
Trump’s announcement follows the recently held “Historic White House Accord on Super Intelligence,” in which prominent technology companies affirmed their commitments to ethical practices towards the American public. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump referred to the newly formed group as the “Super Intelligence Force.”
This initiative comes after a meeting with key technology leaders including Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic; Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla; and Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta. The discussions arose amid growing concerns from AI leaders regarding the potential risks posed by the technology, a subject Trump has not extensively addressed in the past.
Regulatory Landscape
During the summit, tech leaders emphasized the need for regulatory frameworks, though Trump has expressed opposition to heavy-handed regulations. Following the meeting, he mentioned that industry leaders seemed to reach what he called a “tremendous self-regulation” agreement.
Objective of the Task Force
“The Super Intelligence Force will coordinate the Federal Government’s engagement with consumers, public interest groups, religious organizations, critical infrastructure providers, and Super Intelligence Companies,” Trump added in his announcement.
Leadership Background
Jay Clayton, before assuming his role as Director of National Intelligence, served as a U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and was previously the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He takes over leadership of this task force following the tenure of venture capitalist David Sacks, who previously held the position of AI czar but stepped down after his term as a special government employee expired.
Political Context
The formation of the AI task force is particularly timely as discussions about artificial intelligence continue to escalate in Washington, where opinions on regulation diverge starkly. While some lawmakers advocate for a more hands-off approach, others, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, are exploring state-level regulations.
