In recent comments, former US President Donald Trump highlighted growing concerns regarding European Union support for Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia. During a press briefing at the Oval Office, he stated that the EU appears to be weary of the financial commitment required to bolster Ukraine’s defense efforts.
“The European Union has quite a bit of money, although I have to tell you they’re getting tired of spending it,” Trump remarked, emphasizing the importance for Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to pursue a resolution to the war. He expressed concern that a lack of initiative from Zelenskyy could result in negative outcomes for Ukraine.
Concerns Over Financial Commitment
Trump pointed out the substantial resources already allocated by both the United States and Europe to aid Ukraine, stating, “We have given tremendous amounts to Ukraine. We’ve got nothing back, other than high diesel prices.” He implied that the sustainability of such support is in question as Europe grows increasingly fatigued by the ongoing expenses.
Prospects for Peace Talks
When questioned about the potential for peace negotiations after discussions held in Oslo, Trump noted that Russia seems eager to finalize a resolution. He remarked, “I think what’s happening is that Russia would like to get it done,” and described Russia’s military capabilities as a “big machine” that continues to exert pressure.
He also reflected on the significant animosity between President Vladimir Putin and President Zelenskyy as a barrier to reaching an agreement, stating, “The hatred between Putin and Zelenskyy is tremendous. I think that’s most of the reason they haven’t been able to make a deal.”
Meeting for Peace
Addressing whether Zelenskyy and Putin would need to be physically present to sign a peace agreement, Trump suggested that a meeting is not strictly necessary. He indicated a willingness to facilitate negotiations in a different manner, stating, “It’s hard for them to be in the same room. I don’t care how it’s done.”
Discussion on Detained American Teacher
In a separate matter, Trump was asked about the potential for a deal regarding the release of retired American teacher Stephen Hubbard, who has been imprisoned in Russia. While he declined to elaborate, he mentioned his ongoing conversations with Putin about the situation, expressing hope for Hubbard’s return: “I’d love to get him back. It’s time.”
Hubbard was sentenced to nearly seven years in a Russian prison in October 2024 for allegedly serving as a mercenary for Ukraine.
